I really like Zippo's, and I have been trying to make the transition from cheap disposable Bic's to a more permanent lighter. In addition to my new Black Crackle Zippo I also have a Black Ice Zipper style Zippo, but I really don't like to use it because it looks so nice! I don't want to scratch it or wear the logo off, so it ends up sitting in it's case in my drawer. Really nice looking lighter, but not useful as a daily tool. So I needed a solution, something that I didn't have to worry about scratching or having to constantly wipe finger prints off of.

As the title signifies, "Rhino Liner for your Zippo" is what I expected when I bought this lighter. For the most part, that is the case, but in other ways it is not. Yes it does have a gritty texture to it, but it is not rough feeling in the least, in fact it is smoother (or more slick) than a chrome style Zippo. With my Black Ice Zippo when I hold it in my hand I feel as if I have a good grip on it, if I get my thumb and start from the bottom of the lighter and slide it to the top, the case feels as if it has some grip to it (as long as my hands aren't greasy or something). With the Black crackle if I slide my thumb from the bottom to the top, it slides very easily and has virtually no grip on the lighter whatsoever. If you have anything in your house that is painted with a matte black style paint (that has a rough texture), that is basically what this lighter feels like. And it has significantly less grip than a chrome style Zippo.

Now the look of the lighter is great. It's all black with that rough looking texture, simple yet beautiful. I may actually like the look of the Black Crackle more than I do my shiny Black Ice Zippo. And this thing is 100% fingerprint proof and likely very scratch resistant.

Nicely made in usa product. The black crackle finish has a nice feel and the lighter is solidly built. The fit and finish of the lighter is excellent. Whoever says the usa cannot make good products for a good price does not know what they are talking about. Zippo is a good example of how good products made in the usa can be.

Zippo makes a damn durable product, and the black crackle is one of the best. It's very hard to wear off the finish of these lighters and they're pretty much unstoppable.

The black crackle lighter is a throw back to the WWII lighter issued to American servicemen. This lighter has a tough black truck bed liner like material. The lighter is brass on the bottom, so it should not corrode easily. The hinge is a little weak for doing the fip open tricks but it's a nice fire starter. I have one in a brown leather pouch on my M1 Garand and another on a black pouch on my AR. They are really too nice to carve my name into, like the soldiers did in WW2. If the crackle begins to wear off, I'll just take it to an automotive rust proofer and have them smear some tuff kote on it. Plus, it's made on Bradford PA, in the USA.

I have had a few zippo lighters over the years, and have had the same experience as many others--the shiny ones scratch, the "gunmetal" color flakes off, etc., but, until you lose them, they work wonderfully.
I wanted a black zippo this time, and tried the "black stainless steel" model. If your lighter sits in your pocket with anything else like keys, pocket knife, or the like, it will mar the pretty new black surface of your lighter. Not that anyone expects them to stay pristine, but that's just the way it is.
Enter: the black crackle zippo.
I have read in other reviews that this is a re-make of some WW-something era covering, and I believe it. The surface is VERY durable--mine's been put through the ringer and it still looks like it is brand new. (Had it for a few months but carry it every day.) The coating doesn't feel like it's even close to flaking off, and it makes the lighter and the hinge action a little heavier and more solid, which I also like. Oh, and it has survived multiple drops on cement with no marks whatsoever.
Overall, terrific lighter. The butane insert fits perfectly in it as well, in case you aren't a fan of the old school fluid, but that's up to you.
No matter what you're up to, adventuring, construction, vacation, or just need a regular carry, this is the one I'd pick several times over. Enjoy!

Somehow I have acquired a bunch of Zippo's over the years. This Classic Black Crackle is a good one, and a favorite.

I like the "bakelite" finish. Pretty durable. Zippo also offers this same Black Crackle finish in a 1941-Replica model also.

Nice solid 'click'. Classic Zippo build quality. Zippo offers these now in an amazing range of finishes.

I know I don't need to explain or praise Zippo here. It's THE classic American lighter, since before WW2. Great info and company history on Wikipedia.

Compare this with the 1941-model black-crackle Zippo and see which you prefer. Or hey, get both.

You don't have to smoke to love Zippo's. Hope this is helpful. Enjoy!

I bought this Zippo lighter because it is a replica of the lighters that were issued to G.I.s in WWII and that era is of interest to me. I was not disappointed upon receipt of the lighter as it is well made and looks exactly like they did 70 years ago. And speaking of WWII thank a Veteran every chance you get!
