There's Nothing Old About Zippo Vintage
Introduced in 1985, this lighter was designed after a similar lighter created in 1937. Recently celebrating the 30th anniversary of their introduction into the product line, the success of Zippo's 50th anniversary commemorative lighter in 1982 was a strong indicator that Zippo customers and collectors were receptive to the addition of more vintage-style lighters to the product line.
Characteristics that distinguish the Vintage Lighters from today's familiar Zippo windproof lighters include:
- Flat surface on top of lid.
- Flat surface on bottom with Zippo logo from period.
- Bottom stamp identifies the model as a Replica.
Types of Replica Lighters
1935 Replica Lighter
Three-barrel outside hinge joins the lid and bottom; the current Zippo lighter has a five-barrel hinge.
Open hollow rivet secures flint wheel to inside unit.
Distinctive bright brushed chrome finish with or without slashes on the opposite corners of the face and back surfaces.
Flat bottom case with unique bottom stamp.
Five-barrel hinge that joins the lid and the bottom; same as current Zippo lighter.
Sides of the unit are flat, with rounded corners and edges replacing the 1935 square case.
Flat bottom case and flat top case with current bottom stamp.
Standard cardboard box with a special 'Vintage' I-card is the standard packaging for the Vintage models.
1941 Replica Lighter
Four-barrel hinge joins the lid and bottom; the current Zippo lighter has a five-barrel hinge.
Flat planes with sharp, less rounded edges than the current model where the front and back surfaces meet the sides.
Sides of the inside unit are flat, with squared edges where they meet the front and back surfaces.
Inside unit has fewer holes in the chimney than current models; also fitted with a hollow rivet that holds the striking wheel in place.
Silver foil gift box featuring an art deco design is the standard packaging for the 1941 Replica models.
Vintage Lighter Features
The Vintage Lighters have a flat surface on top of the lid and at the bottom. Our current lighter has a 'canned' (recessed) bottom or flat bottom.
The Vintage Lighters have the standard five-barrel hinge.
The Vintage Lighters use the standard, current insert unit with 16 holes in the chimney (8 per side).
Bottom stamp with Zippo logo from the period. This bottom stamp identifies the model as a Replica.

Top customer reviews
1) Squared shape (not rounded top like modern Zippos)
2) Brushed surface to hide scratches and fingerprints
3) Cool hash marks give it that vintage look
4) It's a Zippo so it'll probably never break
It's currently my go-to lighter and it fits easily in the little watch pocket of my jeans. My only complaint is the little metal rivets on my jeans pockets will scratch the brushed surface (as do keys in your pocket banging against the Zippo). That's not a deal breaker for me because it's a lighter that's going to get used, dropped, banged around etc. but if you are trying to have a scratch-free lighter it might be a problem. The scratches are hairline and really only visible when it's held at the right angle, but they are there.
I use this Zippo with a Thunderbird soft flame butane insert and really love the convenience of butane fuel along with the Zippo body. I'd recommend this lighter to anybody who wants to have a cool, retro looking lighter.
While it does run about $4 more than a standard Zippo, it is well worth the money. This Zippo is a Vintage Series 1937 model with some slight differences from today's Zippos. Modern Zippo lighters have a bit of a curved top, whereas this Zippo has a flatter top. Aside from that, it's not much different from any other High Polish Chrome Zippo other than the fact that it has some neat "slashes" in the corners.
The performance is not unlike any other Zippo. I've conducted numerous tests in varying weather conditions and was able to get a light fairly quickly in standard and windy weather, at most having to attempt twice before I finally got flame. The lighter has been dropped numerous times on hard ground but I still get a very durable structure with very little horizontal play on the hinge. It comes in a little case like any Zippo would, with some basic information and safety precautions in the top part.
One thing I didn't know, being that this was my first Zippo, is how fast the lighter fluid went. I use my Zippo for tricks, so I don't really need to light it often, but the fluid had evaporated completely in a bit longer than a week. I'd highly recommend a 12 oz. can of Zippo fluid and also a card of Flints (run about $5 including shipping, or you can find them at your local smoke shop or take them out of a disposable lighter). This applies to any Zippo, of course.
I am very satisfied with this product. It is an essential for collectors and just cool to be able to have a unique Zippo model that many others may not have.
