When used as it should -- spreading it & pulling out some of the cotton wool, and holding the Zippo right next to it -- it catches fire with the first strike.
Just for fun, as I had a lighter, I had used it a few times to light a Solo Stove Titan.
Last Saturday, while offroading after heavy rains, there were no dry twigs. We cut a bit larger pieces off dry branches, and smearing a little bit of Vaseline inside the opened up tinder stick (leaving some "feathered" cotton wool clean), a single tinder stick was enough to light the wood. With a bit of Vaseline is also burns longer.
By now, I had used the Zippo tinder sticks 6 more times, for lighting the Solo Stove Titan. I could use a simple lighter, but the Zippo & sticks were fun...
Each time, they ignited with the first or second strike of the Zippo, so I still don't understand reports such as "the tinder sticks don't catch fire".
Yes, the fire should be prepared so one or two tinder sticks would suffice to start it, and yes, they don't burn long.
I'm sure that with some attention to details such as wind, or how you arrange the fire, anyone can use them without any problem.
On the other hand- ever try to use one of them when everything else is wet? Really tough. It's even hard to start a fire with matches then.
Enter the Zippo Waxed Tinder Sticks, these work great in wet weather- but you should keep them dry (which given those tiny zip lock bags, is pretty easy). Works with flints, matches and of course- Zippo lighters!
Now yes, there are cheaper options. But with Amazons amazing Add-On Item program, a packet of these are pretty reasonable. So, yeah, next big Amazon order, nab a pack of these, and split between two small ziplocks.
To light: Gently pull apart the cotton batting to increase the surface area to catch a spark and go. The burn time of a single tinder stick was approx. 70 seconds--plenty of working time to get a fire going. I have not tested under windy conditions nor have I stored one wher eit would be subjected to heat. My fear is that the coating will melt,
