Most importantly, the actual clasp is very dangerous and dysfunctional. When the leash twists, the D-ring from the collar pushes against the latch, causing it to come out of place to the side. Should my dog see a squirrel or get excited on the leash, the leash could very easily unclip from his collar.
I really liked this leash and debated on replacing the clip, but I think I would feel more comfortable finding another alternative.
Edit: Since this is the first review listed on Amazon for this product, I figured I should say that it appears ZippyPaws has changed the design of the clasp to solve the problems I experienced. However, it sounds like some people are still receiving the older model when they purchase it. When I need a new leash I may very well try the new model of this one, but I won't change my star rating until I've actually got new data.
First, it does hold well, seems solid, no issue with the clasp as many people are reporting. Seems like that is fixed.
Unfortunately, where the clip is on mine I have a huge gap where the leash is sewn together, this allows the clip to ride up and get stuck above the plastic (orange piece). This means that the leash gets stuck at a strange angle from the dog and starts pulling on the plastic, pretty sure it's going to get knocked out or be broken at any minute.
Also, the leashes I received both have issues with the black / grey wrap. It is not solid rope, it instead appears to be a sleeve around some rope and the sleeve on mine is pulling up in a few locations, one spot in particular it seems like it was "fixed" by melting the nylon, this is right where your hand sits so I get to feel that little hard piece of charred nylon all the time. The other leach I got there grey thread is loose and pulling up, again right in the handle part of the leash.
I'd previously had another rope leash and it lasted me years before it just got too gross and dirty. Guess I'll go back to the other brand.
I ordered this leash February 5th, 2014 - nearly three years ago - and it's still in great shape. I think I've washed it twice, but it's indestructible, still looks decent, and does a great job making sure my dog is still attached to me. In the past, I've had various leashes that left me paranoid that, with a good tug, my dog (a 70lb goldendoodle) might be able to break lose and run away or that the fabric would break. This leash has been so reliable, I've never even had that consideration.
The only thing I don't care for with this leash is the hook at the end. That said, it looks like ZippyPaws has replaced the gateway-style snap-hook with a more secure vertical snap-hook, which was my only complaint. Keep up the great work!
I have a 50 lb Staffordshire Terrier that doesn't pull much at all... I wanted to get a strong leash that I knew would last me for quite some time. My old leash lasted the life of my previous dog, I figured if I bought a good quality leash it would work just as well. Not only is this a poor quality product, it is dangerous!
