Finding a wall stud behind sheet rock or paneling used to be a hit and miss routine, but the new Zircon stud finders have taken the "miss" out of the equation. Zircon's i700 MultiScanner OneStep not only locates the wood or metal studs but the i700 scanner also finds the exact center of the stud and will warn the user if there are "hot" AC electrical wires in or near the stud and even wiring that is incased in plastic conduit. Added features include auto recalibration to insure accuracy, a large backlit LCD floating display head to prevent tilting and non-marring pads to protect the wall's finish.
Included are an "integrated erasable marker for one-hand operation" and a setting that allows the user to search exclusively for metal pipes. The "auto on" feature of the i700 automatically powers up when the unit is pressed against the wall's surface and the dual SpotLite feature and auto signal will indicate the exact center of the stud even when working in low light conditions. Use the i700 to hang cabinets, pictures, mirrors, and shelves or to install ceiling fans, grab bars, and chandeliers. You can also use the i700 to locate metal pipes behind tile or in concrete or to find conduit, rebar, electrical boxes, exhaust vents, and ducting. An important safety feature of the i700 is its ability to continuously locate and trace hot wires behind walls, floors, and ceilings. --D. Barnett

My husband loves it! It is easy to use. He was able to find the AC wiring easily. It detected metal pipes and the center of the studs without any problem. He has a laser stud finder and it is not as accurate. There is an additional feature with this too. It has an eraseable marker to mark the stud needed to screw into or to access the pipe or wiring.
We have a section of drywall that is unfinished. The screws are exposed. This piece sits over metal pipe. As a test, my husband moved the scanner over the drywall to find the pipes. It kept picking up the screws and the pipe making it confusing to pinpoint the pipes.
This multiscanner is better than most. The reviewers were dead on about the quality of this tool. It is invaluable for homeowners. It is a great value costwise too.
If you think buying a Zircon i700 is a waist of money...then think again, until you hit a project like I did last month trying to mount a flat screen TV on the wall. You know how heavy that flat screen TV is, so you don't want your mounting screws are off the stud's center line aren't you?
I was very happy with this i700, (I talk to myself: "Ah, I finally bought something that it works!"). It helps me to find the left side, the center line and the right side of the stud easily. To be honest, 90% of the time is correct (after tested 5 times on the same spot), that's enought accurate tolerance for me. I haven't test the AC or metal yet so no comment on these modes.
I'm highly recommend the Zircon i700 to everyone as I did to my brothers.
It does wall studs well, as long as the insulation in the walls is not packed too tightly and there are not other items in the wall (such as vents or wires).
It gave me several misreadings on live AC electrical wires as well.
It did a fine job as a metal detector.
Really, I believe you are better off buying a cheap one.
