StudSensor 70 Features
StudScan and DeepScan - Center and Edge Finding Stud Finding Mode
The SS 70's StudScan and DeepScan modes locate the edges and center of wood and metal studs and joists behind walls, floors and ceilings.
StudScan finds shallower wood or metal studs up to .75 of an inch (19 mm) deep while DeepScan doubles the scanning depth to 1.5 inches (38 mm).
Make sure to note whether the WireWarning Detection is alerting to live, unshielded AC wiring before drilling into the center of the stud.
WireWarning Detection is a feature that is always on while you are scanning in StudScan and DeepScan modes. It alerts you to the presence of live, unshielded, electrical AC wires up to 2 inches (50 cm) deep. The WireWarning LED illuminates when the SS70 detects live AC voltage. If scanning begins over a live AC electrical wire, the WireWarning LED flashes continuously.
Note: Please turn off the electricity and use extreme caution in areas where live AC voltage is detected before nailing or drilling.
Integrated Wall Marker
The SS 70's integrated erasable marker allows easy, one-handed operation.
When the target is found, simply push down on the 'mark' button. The pencil marks the surface without interrupting the scan.
The SS 70 comes with a pencil pre-installed, and refills in the box.
The Key to Success is the Battery
The installation of a fresh battery, with an extended expiration date is required to steadily power the integrated LCD screen in Zircon tools.

Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Does the StudSensor 70 include a battery?
Answer: No. Zircon stud finders and detectors, particularly those with LCD screens, require and consume a great deal of current from batteries. For optimal performance, a brand-new, recently purchased 9V alkaline battery, with an extended expiration date is not included but is required to properly power the SS 70.
Question: I inserted a 9V battery, but the tool doesn’t turn on or is giving me strange readings. Is my tool broken?
Answer: Please be sure to use a fresh, brand new 9V alkaline battery with an extended expiration date. Batteries that may work in a smoke detector or remote control may not have adequate voltage to power the sensing technology in stud finders.
Question: Does the stud finder need to be calibrated?
Answer: Yes, as with all Zircon stud finders, the StudSensor 70 needs to calibrate to the surface before scanning. Calibrating the stud finder on an empty wall gives the device a chance to measure the wall thickness and material density, as well as register factors like humidity, temperature, and even the minor electric readings from your hand, which all have an impact on the readings from the wall. Calibrating is easy and just takes a second. To calibrate, simply place the unit flat against the surface to be scanned and press the Power Button. When powering the SS 70 on, all the LEDs and the SpotLite Pointer will briefly flash and the tool will beep. After this occurs, the green READY LED will be illuminated indicating that calibration has occurred and the tool is ready to begin scanning. It is important not to move the tool or begin scanning until the calibration process has taken place for the most accurate results.
Question: What does “Center Finding” mean?
Answer: Center Finding stud finders locate both the edges, AND the center, of wood and metal studs and joists in one step. “Edge Finding” stud finders, on the other hand, only find the edges of studs, so you must determine the center. Finding the center of the stud to mount heavy objects is critical as the stud’s center is the most secure location of the stud.
Question: What is DeepScan mode?
Answer: Unlike StudScan mode which scans through one layer of drywall up to 0.75 inch thick (19 mm), DeepScan mode scans through 2 layers of drywall up to 1.5 inches (38 mm) deep. DeepScan mode is a higher sensitivity scanning mode that should be used when there are extra layers of wallboard or paneling. Extra layers in a wall can make it difficult to find studs in regular StudScan mode. To minimize false positives and/or finding other objects further behind the wall that may not be a stud, always start your scan in StudScan mode first.
Question: How do I scan in DeepScan mode?
Answer: With the unit still placed flat against the wall and turned on, quickly (within one second) release and re-press the Power Button. The orange DeepScan LED will flash continuously, indicating that the tool has entered High Sensitivity (DeepScan) mode.
Question: How can I be certain the objects found behind my wall are studs in DeepScan mode?
Answer: DeepScan mode has increased sensitivity so you may have located something other than a stud. Studs are equally spaced to either side (12, 16, or 24 in. apart) and typically run from floor to ceiling. To better confirm that what you found is a stud, check for other studs equally spaced to either side or for the same stud at several heights directly above and below the first stud indication. A stud reading would also measure approximately 1.5 in. (38 mm) apart from each edge. Anything larger or smaller may not be a stud if not near a door or window.
Question: What is Auto Correcting Technology (ACT)?
Answer: Auto Correcting Technology (ACT) is a feature that enables the tool to automatically adjust for common calibration errors. It checks calibration 10 times per second and automatically recalibrates when/if needed. If scanning begins directly over a stud, the tool will transparently recalibrate, so you don’t have to, and will find that stud when you scan back over it.
Question: Why does the tool beep and the lights flash when scanning for a stud?
Answer: The tool could’ve been calibrated over a stud, calibrated on a dense part of the wall, or the back of the tool may have slightly lifted or tilted during the scan. Move the StudSensor 70 over a couple of inches to the left or right, re-calibrate, and start your scan again.
Question: What is WireWarning?
Answer: WireWarning Detection is a feature that is always on while you are scanning in StudScan and DeepScan modes to alert you to the presence of live, unshielded, electrical AC wires up to 2 inches (50 mm) deep. As you approach an area with live AC voltage, an “AC” and lightning bolt icon will display in the top left corner of the LCD screen. This is the WireWarning Detection Icon. If your scan directly starts over an area with live AC voltage, the “AC” and lightning bolt icon will flash. Please turn off the electricity and use extreme caution in areas where live AC voltage is detected before nailing or drilling.
Question: Will this StudSensor 70 locate metal studs?
Answer: Yes, the SS 70 will locate metal studs. Since stud finders are looking for a change in density behind dry wall, not a particular material, they will react to metal as well as wooden studs. The SS 70 will locate wood and metal studs up to 0.75 inches (19 mm) deep while DeepScan mode locates targets up to 1.5 inches (38 mm) deep.
Question: Does the SS 70 work on wood paneling and other wood surfaces?
Answer: The SS 70 is optimized to scan through standard interior sheetrock / drywall (gypsum) construction. This tool will work on wood, plywood, wood paneling and particle board up to 1.5 inches (38 mm) thick.
Question: Will the SS 70 work on textured wall surfaces, acoustic ceilings, or wall paper?
Answer: Yes, the SS 70 will work on textured surfaces and dried wall paper as long as it does not contain any metallic foil or fibers. For highly textured walls or acoustic ceilings, place or tape a thin piece of cardboard onto the surface to be scanned. Recalibrate and scan over the cardboard in DeepScan mode.
Question: Can I use this stud finder to find studs behind carpet?
Answer: No. Zircon stud finders are designed for hollow interior walls. They will generally work well to find studs or joists through a plywood subfloor, after the carpeting/flooring has been removed.
Question: Will the SS 70 work on ceramic tile?
Answer: While the StudSensor 70 may be able to read through ceramic tile, the many variable layers behind tiled surfaces make it one of the more difficult scanning environments. A Zircon MultiScanner with Metal Scan mode or a dedicated metal scanner from the Zircon MetalliScanner line is recommended to more accurately locate the nails or screw heads in deeper and/or difficult scanning areas.
Question: Does this StudSensor work on lath and plaster?
Answer: No, due to the inconsistent nature in which lath and plaster is constructed, the SS 70 cannot scan on lath and plaster walls. A Zircon MultiScanner with Metal Scan mode or a dedicated metal scanner from the Zircon MetalliScanner line can be used to easily locate the nails or screw heads that attach the wood lath to the studs.
Question: Can I use this stud finder to scan the outside wall of my house?
Answer: No. Zircon StudSensors are designed and recommended for interior use only.
Question: I'm planning on mounting my new flat screen TV to the wall. Will this stud finder help me?
Answer: Yes. The SS 70 is perfect for basic home or office jobs. The center-finding technology allows you to find and easily mark the center of the stud for secure mounting of TV's, and AV equipment, closet or garage shelving, heavy mirrors, light fixtures, coat racks and more.
Question: Is the tool waterproof?
Answer: No. The StudSensor 70 is splash and water resistant, but not waterproof.
Question: What is the difference between magnetic and electronic stud finders?
Answer: Magnetic stud finders are simply magnets that look for anything magnetic behind a wall. Typically, they are advertised to find screws or nails that hold the wall surface to the studs. However, nails often times are not placed in the center of studs making it difficult to determine where the stud’s center is or how wide the stud is.
Electronic stud finders, such as the SS 70, on the other hand, operate by detecting density changes behind a surface (like a wall) and will clearly and precisely indicate the edges and center of a stud. The center of a stud is the most secure location when mounting anything heavy. For applications like mapping out floor joists electronic stud finders have an advantage over magnets because they are not attracted to nails holding floor boards to a subfloor as well as nails in joists.
Question: Does the StudSensor 70 come with a warranty?
Answer: The StudSensor 70 comes with a limited one year warranty when fulfilled by and shipped from Amazon.

The Zircon StudSensor 70 center finding electronic wall scanner comes loaded with the latest technology in density detecting software and circuitry. Using the patented CenterVision technology, the SS 70 easily locates the center and edges of wood and metal studs and joists behind walls, floors, and in ceilings with just one pass. The specialized SpotLite Pointing System and an audio tone indicate the location of the target. In StudScan mode, the SS70 locates the center and edges of shallower wood or metal studs up to 3/4 of an inch (19 mm) deep. Switch over to DeepScan mode by quickly pressing the Power Button twice to double the scanning depth to 1.5 inches (38 mm). The StudSensor 70 is programmed with a WireWarning Detection feature that indicates the presence of live unshielded electrical wires up to 2 inches (50 mm) deep when using both stud scan modes. The SS 70 also comes equipped with a built-in erasable marker enabling you to mark the hazards or studs with the simple push of a button. To get started, install one brand new 9V alkaline battery (not included). Place the unit flat against the wall and calibrate it. Once you hear the calibration beep and see the “Ready” LED light, continue to hold the Power Button and slowly slide the tool across the surface. As the stud detector approaches the edge of a stud, the red LEDs progressively light from the bottom up in both scanning modes. The top lighted “Center” LED, SpotLite Pointing System, and audio tone all indicate when the stud’s center is found. Make sure to note whether the WireWarning Detection is alerting to live, unshielded AC wiring before drilling between the two marks into the center of the stud. Now delivered to you in our Amazon exclusive easy to open packaging with no clam shells and no twist ties, the SS 70 is ready for use just seconds after you receive it. With the Zircon StudSensor 70, you can safely maneuver through the most complicated of projects with the professional confidence that comes from owning a Zircon.

On hand, we had an old Red Black and Decker laser leveling tool and stud finder and this fancy, highly touted Zircon SS 70. So highly touted that I'm a little fearful of reprisals for writing this. We got this tool because of its "deep scanning" and marking features, and the desire for something better than our 1990's era Black and Decker. Out of 30 studs in walls of one room that had double drywall, the Zircon located three studs, as well as several places that had live electrical wires adjacent to a recepticle. The Black and Decker located five studs in spite of its lack of fancy "deep scanning" features. We tried the Zircon on some old areas that had only single layer 1/2" drywall with fair to good results.
We remembered that drywall screws and nails are magnetic. We thought of just using a magnet, but then wondered about iPhone apps and the compass. Yes! Turns out that a free magnetometer app for the iPhone 6 located EVERY stud quickly and accurately. Since the iPhone has to be moved over screws that could be above the marking point, we attached a small washer on a string from the back of the iPhone to act as a plumb bob. Free, reliable, easy to use, and no false positives.
The Zircon will find wooden studs under drywall without nails or screws (sure, glued-on drywall walls do exist). It does locate power (but then again, above and below a receptacle one will usually find a stud and power - no mystery). We did not try the $1.29 magnetic pointer type stud finder from the big box store, but I'd guess it would have worked okay too.
We really disliked the need to put tape on our freshly painted light-colored flat walls or drag a tool directly on the wall. The iPhone (or Android I'm sure has such a thing too) method works without tape or touching the wall.
All electronic stud finders should have a variable sensitivity magnetic mode as well, with instructions to the user that in such a mode, one is searching for the fasteners on the wall instead of the studs directly.
I'm knocking two stars because reliable results were not obtained on double drywall as claimed.
Most people don't have double layers of 5/8" drywall, but many people have a need for it in this noisey and distracting world. The Zircon SS 70 works fine on thin drywall and maybe even lime and lath type plaster walls.
Two stars overall due to poor value, one false claim, having to either tape or rub nice clean walls with an electronic device. Zircon could have a much better product for the money if they would test and refine the tool and provide some kind of variable sensitivity and programming to include field strength analysis from multiple inputs.
Edit: One more star added because Zircon responded to my review. Sometimes, having a company that cares is at least some consolation for a product that doesn't work. An offer to refund or, better still, send a product that scans double layer drywall, or 5/8 drywall without having to use tape to cover the wall, etc. would be a better response from the customer point of view.
Simple to use and effective - couldn't ask for more.
