The instructions were a little light, but the unit wasn't that difficult to figure out. On boot, it'll even give you a QR code to download software on your Android/iPhone/Windows phone. The app, annoyingly, is ad-enabled.
The cameras are small and lightweight. They easily blend in with my gutters and you won't see them at a casual glance. While the stock cameras do not have autofocus, you can remove the outer weather lens and manually focus by turning the small black lens ring inside. They are a 1/4" CMOS sensor. Image quality is about what you'd expect from a system like this. Typical "4:3 aspect ratio, stretched to 16:9" stuff.
You have a number of image adjustment settings through software for brightness, contrast, hue, etc. It would be really nice if a software update allowed it to auto-adjust as needed. Getting a good image on a cloudy day may result in an overexposed image on a sunny day.
Night shot is hit-or-miss. Obviously you're not going to get a crystal clear image using just the lights on the cameras, but it's enough to judge someone's relative stature. You can have separate image settings for night and day to help, but it is based on time instead of actual camera mode.
Interference is minimal on these cameras. One has developed a bit of interference since installation. I may try repulling its wire to see if that corrects the issue. I made the mistake of purchasing a generic 'Universal Regulated Switching Power Supply' (2A model, ~$8 on Amazon). These are not shielded and will introduce a lot of interference.
The motion sensitive recording does function, but not as reliably as I'd like. Setting it to high sensitivity will result in every single bug near the lens triggering it. But yet, opening my garage door doesn't count as motion. A nice feature they included is the ability to set which areas of the screen to monitor for motion. This way, you can avoid having every single passing car triggering a recording. The device apparently gives the ability to 'prerecord' before the motion was detected, but I haven't seemed to figure out how to do it.
I'm not sure if Amazon allows video links, but here are examples of the recording quality:
What it needs:
Automatic image adjustment settings
Ad-free mobile app
More pre-recording for motion sensing
I have found that replacing the camera sensors with 1/3 Sony CCDs made a HUGE difference in overall quality. You can order just the board (I specifically chose the CXD4140, 700TVL) and swap it into the ZMODO's housing. Nighttime difference is, well, night and day. It does a MUCH better job at compensating for lighting differences. At about $30 per board, it was worth it to me. You can save a bit by going to a 600TVL.
If I were to do it over, I would go with the 1Tb DVR but the 8 channel one that comes with 4 cameras. It isn't much more than this one and allows for expansion. It would be nice to add a PTZ camera and maybe another camera or two in order to get full coverage of my house. As it is, the 4 channel/4 camera just covers my entrances and windows on each side of the house. An extra one for each of the sides and maybe an additional one to cover the full front yard.
Would I buy it again? Yes. Would I recommend it? Yes, already have. But again, I'd go with the 1Tb/8 channel/4 or 8 camera option. I personally would get the 4 camera and then get upgraded cameras and a PTZ to complete the mix.
All in all a pretty decent system for the money.
The IR LED lights are not as bright to see a bright image at night from far away, so I just installed a 20w LED floodlight outside. Nice security system.
I reccomend it.
