UPDATE on 3/8/17 - I dropped this down 1 star after I learned from customer support that the motion alert photos are only able to be taken in LOW Definition mode - NOT 720P! The camera's default resolution is LD not HD. This is crazy since the camera is capable of being manually switched to HD (720P) while in viewing mode, but remains in LD mode when it captures pictures during a motion alert. How is that going to help me identify someone entering my backyard (for example). When they change the software to allow the user to set the camera to HD as the default setting, I'll return my rating to 4 stars. (Note - customer service was very prompt in answering my question about this issue. Excellent customer service.)
The process to set up was fairly painless, though the lack of a decent manual was glaring. However using the Funlux app on my Samsung phone I was able to get things going in short order. The motion detection seemed to work well too, this would give you 5 snapshots in a 5 second spread. However it would be several minutes before this would "reset" and be able to trip again.
Now for the crummy part. These are advertised as 720 P HD cams, but the photos captured are not. Photos captured by the motion detection are only 240 P (320 x 240). The photos are tiny, blurry and not much good for getting an ID of someone peering into your home.
IF, however, I take a manual snapshot via my android phone, THAT photo will come out as 720 P (1280 x 720). Frustrating!
I want 720 P for all photos taken! Period.
Also take note, the Funlux phone app would not stay in HD mode. I used the Zmodo app (basically the same thing) and HD mode would then stick. But the photos of the motion captured photos was still low def. I worked all day on this glaring problem to no solution. I am currently in contact with support, and I will give this a day or two but I most likely will send these back. I want to like these cameras, but false advertising is unacceptable. I have very fast cable internet. I will look into my router for issues also.
Some kind of decent manual would be of great help! There is none provided anywhere.
One other problem is the lack of any video controls for brightness and contrast. When the sun is out, anyone standing under a covered porch is going to be in the shade and blacked out.
Also the cloud service is non-existent beyond basic viewing.
UPDATE JUNE 3, 2017;
Yesterday I experimented with the motion detection and alert system. I turned off the wifi for my phone, then tripped the camera. I am pleased to say that the push notification came quickly over the cellular network. Now for the bad.
I have received an email from Funlux, they offer only apologizes and ask for "my patience" in regards to the cloud server with no suggestions, explanations or help. After thinking about things, some truths became apparent to me.
#1, Sending video to the cloud and then back to your phone/computer takes up bandwidth. For a free service I can understand the streaming video to be heavily compressed (compression of video and pictures causes more pixelation), It is obvious to me that Funlux/Zmodo may also be overwhelmed with traffic and unable to keep up with demand. One of my buying decisions is based on buyer feedback. I read things like "crystal clear", or "sharp image". These comments are in the March/April range. Another buyer complained that his video degraded since he bought his system, then it hit me that the algorithms used for compression were stepped up to deal with traffic. The video/photos I get are anything but "crystal clear". But to degrade a picture from a motion event from 720 p down to 240 p negates any chance to identify who is in the picture.
#2 I would expect less than perfect video for a free service, and would happily pay for a better cloud server experience, one that would step up the resolution of pictures. I am uneasy that this system is not up and running and I have no guarantees that this will ever work right. I had assumed that the reason for the cameras being so inexpensive is the business model of paying for monthly cloud support. But it's not there.
I have included 3 photos. The first one is me, using my phone, to take a manual photo. It is at 720 p resolution, though you can see the heavy compression, it is fairly clear enough to see what I look like. The second two photos show the problem with video gain when in the shadow, and the one of me tripping the motion detection, I was less than 15 feet away, impossible to even see what I look like.
I really want to like these cameras and am on the fence on what to do. Do I wait to see if the cloud actually gets up and going? I will give this a few days but I am leaning on sending these back for a more "in house" solution.
UPDATE JUNE 4, 2017
In reading messages from Funlux Support to another Amazon customer about these cameras, it was said that the cloud will be up in a "few months". This was only a few days old message.
That is the deal killer for me. Too bad, could of been a nice deal but for the cloud server and resolution issues. I have decided to send these cameras back. Thank you Amazon for you no hassle return policy!
Alert photos (5 per alert) are only able to be taken in (LD) LOW Definition mode - NOT 720P! The camera's default resolution is LD not HD. I contacted customer service and they said they are working on this feature but do not know when it will default to HD.How is that going to help me identify someone entering my driveway (for example). When they change the software to allow the user to set the camera to HD as the default setting, I'll be happier. (Note - customer service was very prompt in answering my question about this issue. Excellent customer service.)
I want to let you know the cords provided were long enough for the camera in the front of my house, but the camera in the backyard needed a much longer cord due to the large picture window it was placed above. I did research and found: [Cable Matters 2 Pack, Gold Plated Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Type A to Micro-B Cable in White 15 Feet] and [Wall Charger, Sixsim 3-Pack Universal Portable Travel Wall Charger Adapter Plug for iPhone 7 7 Plus, 6S, iPad, Samsung Galaxy S8 S7, LG G5 G4, HTC, Nexus, Blackberry, Motorola, Sony, Nokia and More] both these items were from Amazon.com and works great with the camera.
I have one cable I did not use because I drilled the hole through the house in the middle of the split windows and have it running down the middle section of the wood frame to the outlet. The other window does not have a middle section as it is a very large picture window so I had to drill the hole at the top, centered above the window and take the cable inside above the frame around to the left, down the left side frame and under the windowsill then down to the outlet. I then plugged the holes where the wires go through the walls with backer rod (in case I ever want to remove them, easier to do so) the used silicone caulk on both sides. Worked out very well.
