The Zojirushi micom water boiler and warmer replaces the CD-JS22 and is terrific for serving hot beverages, making instant soups and blanching vegetables. It provides up to 74-Ounce 2.2 liters of hot water for instant coffee, tea, hot chocolate, soups and more. The unit features a micro-computerized temperature-control system and multiple keep-warm temperature settings that include 140, 195, and 208 degrees F. Simple one-touch controls supply a reboil button, which reboils water to 212 degrees F; a dispense button; a dispenser lock-release key; and temperature- and timer-setting buttons. The dispenser's energy-saving timer function-from 6 to 10 hours-automatically turns on the boiler at a later time to save electricity, and its LCD display shows the actual water temperature at all times, as well as the temperature and timer settings. Other features include automatic safety shut-off, a see-through water-level gauge, a removable magnetic 2-8/9-foot power cord, a swivel base and carry handle for convenience, and an easy-to-clean nonstick interior. This unit is also RoHS compliant which stands for "Restriction of Hazardous Substances" and is a directive that restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. Zojirushi is working proactively to manufacture products that are RoHS compliant. The material restricted by this compliance include lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ether.

We purchased it to have a convenient way of sterilizing water for medication, and of course anticipating its use for an easy brew, hot chocolate or tea. Using the microwave twice a day to was leaving the inside of it full of condensation (to the point that parts on the door are rusting on the piece of junk Whirlpool Gold microwave).
Heating up 3L of water takes forever in a microwave or on the stove. This thing has it boiled in no time, and will keep it at your choice of 208, 195, or 140F. Why do you need 3 choices ? Because there's perfect temp for a variety of beverages and it makes a big difference. The unit itself is extremely well-designed with controls that make sense, and some features that I'd not think of. It has two speeds of dispensing in case you'd like a slow rate to use on a pour-over. To dispense, there's a digital unlock button that is pressed before the Dispense button as a safety feature. It has a cleaning regimen feature, and the power cord is easily detatched to empty/fill the unit or just power it off.
And the uses keep growing ! Ramen ? Ready to go. Simple syrup ? Super easy. French Press ? Instant soups? Warm knife for butter or pre-heating a mug? Hot water for cleaning toothbrushes and any other personal care item you can think of ? Seems like every day I find more things.
On the shipping - the unit was shipped in the retail box with no protective packaging. While packed nicely, the retail box isn't designed for the rigors of individual shipping. This is the first time I've purchased anything from Amazon and the item wasn't packaged.
Pros: Heats quickly, easy to operate, no off taste from hardware
Cons; Don't use TAP or REGULAR bottled water (use distilled - we use SmartWater from Costco) or you will get residue on the liner.
Leaving the unit to keep the water at the HIGH setting (208) makes the unit run HOT (you can smell it - the electronics)
I like my coffee really hot (i pre-heat the mug in the microwave before adding coffee and hot water - so the cup stays warm for a LONG time and i can sip it slowly) so i always fill just after it comes to a boil (212). If i'm expecting to have a 2nd cup i reduce the holding temp to the LOW setting (140 it takes a long time to cool down that low), When i want that 2nd cup i have it boil again while I warm the 2nd cup and then i just unplug it. I think that by using this method we should be able to extend the life of this unit by several YEARS ... and save a little electricity.
The built in filter is really nice and the directions have an english section so it was easy to get started. The filter does a good job at removing the chlorine taste and it is unbelievably convenient to have warm clean water at your disposal. It's very well made.
It does take 5 hours or so for the temperature to get down to 140 after the initial boil so plan ahead if you are planning on using it to drink japanese green tea. I use it for coffee in the AM and tea in the PM so I leave it at 140 and bring it up in the morning and let it drop throughout the day.
