This is the first 'fuzzy logic' rice cooker I've owned. I had the old kettle style Zojirushi for over 20 years. When the last one died I went to the Aroma rice cooker that Cook's Illustrated recommended. It did makes good white rice, but the build quality is extremely poor. I decided to go ahead and spend the $$ for this model. I went with the 3 cup since I rarely made more then 2 cups for the three of us.
I did run most of the settings: I made basmati, jasmine, Uncle Ben's converted, medium and brown rices. It has the most problems with jasmine rice (between the white and long grain settings) but it still came out good. The rest of the settings were 5 star. It is the first rice cooker I've had that actually makes good brown rice which is a major plus. The basmati came out aromatic with each grain separated using the long grain setting.
One note on cooking times: The typically run from 45 to 60 minutes. They mention in the manuals that soak time is built into their programs so there is no need to soak the rice in advance.
In addition i made quinoa and like the rice it came out nice and fluffy with each grain separated.
The build quality appears to be solid. Rice pan has a non-stick coating, but it appears to be tough. Zojirushi says it is OK to rinse the rice in it, but I still use a cheap stainless steel bowl for this. why risk the damage to the coating? They have several features that make clean up easy, with no trapped water like on the Aroma.
