Steel Cut Oatmeal
This is a special menu setting for cooking steel cut oatmeal. The cooking flow is different than the regular Porridge setting, and has a shorter completion time.
Brown or GABA Brown
The Brown Rice Activation (or GABA Brown Setting) activates brown rice by keeping the temperature inside the pan at about 104°F for 2 hours. By activating brown rice, GABA, one of the nutrients contained in brown rice, increases its amount 1.5 times as much as that contained in non-activated brown rice. GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a type of amino acid said to lower blood pressure, improve kidney function, and relieve stress.
Long Grain White
This is a special menu setting for cooking long grain white rice. The cooking flow is different than the White rice setting because long grain white rice cooks differently than short or medium grain white rice.
Detachable and washable inner lid.
Removable steam vent cap allows for high-temperature cooking without messy over flows.
Fold-down handle allows unit to be easily transported.
Built-in retractable power cord makes moving and storing hassle-free.

There is nothing like hot fluffy rice that has just been cooked; when it's not too mushy or too firm and the natural sweetness of the rice comes through with each bite. Zojirushi rice cookers make it easy to enjoy eating perfectly steamed rice all the time, without the guesswork. When it' As simple as pushing a button, The hardest part is going to be the wait, while our cookers do all the work.

Three steps to good rice: Buy a rice cleaner, buy a storage container for your rice and buy this cooker
This is great for the basmati rice I use. It is less sticky than cooking it in Instant Pot. It is a step up, but IP rice is good enough for me. So it is the steel cut oats feature that really has me enthusiastic. I keep this Zojirushi on my counter and use it almost every day. Sometimes twice a day.
Cons: I was surprised at how small this is. I cook for 1 to 3 people and it is perfect. If you cook for big eaters or more people, you would do better with a larger size.
I like the size of the cooker; it's perfect for one or two people. However the first time I made rice (short grain), it was really soggy/mushy.
The second time I had the same result. I used the cup provided and followed the line on the bowl, so I'm not sure what the issue is. But now I just have learned to put in water so that it's lower (by quite a bit) than the line on the bowl. That gives me the right consistency.
But it's disappointing to have to make those adjustments after having spent good money. Otherwise I do like the design of the machine. Removing the top is very easy although I noticed a little plastic piece hanging. Again, I think the quality is not there because it wasn't made in Japan. I will probably consider replacing with a made in Japan model in the future.
This is my third Zojirushi Rice cooker! My first Zojirushi Rice cooker was a 10 cup cooker I purchased at the PX in 1998. It just gave up the ghost in April 2017 after about 19 years of hard service! I replaced it with the newer model: #HCC-18XH 10 cup! Wow, what a cooker, Oh Man have they come a long way over these many years! I am so pleased with it, I purchased a third Zojirushi this month, a model #NS-LGC-05XB 3 cup! I will be using this little guy in our 40 foot Alfa SeeYa Motorhome. I have already made about 20 cups of different types and styles of rice with it. What a snap and ease of use etc. and the bottom line is "Outstanding Rice In Every Cup Made". I have many Zojirushi kitchen appliances, all still going and I have never had a problem other than just wearing the things out with heavy use over many years of service! This is a great company with a great product, across the board, bar-none!!
I am a very well pleased Zojirushi return and lifetime customer!
Update: 1/28/17 BEST brown rice I've ever eaten anywhere after using the GABA brown rice setting. I also made some steel cut oats using that setting. The only draw back is that it takes an hr.

But that all changed after the first use. Now she is a rice cooking champ. Rice comes out perfect. For every kind of rice the setting is easy to choose and the results are consistently astounding - fluffy white rice, nutty brown rice, chewy sushi rice, even steel cut oats. She has been so happy with the results, I'll need a minivan to hold all the babies we'll be having.
For real, we have had rice 90 times since we got this, with consistently spectacular results every time with every variety. The 5 or 6 times I made overnight steel cut oats they were good. Not as good as what I make standing over the stove stirring for half an hour, but for less than 2 minutes of prep the night before the results are darn good.
So for any variety of rice (let's pick sushi), all we do is scoop (let's pick 2) cups (you must use the special included cup, not Imperial 8oz/250ml cups) of the chosen variety of uncooked rice (still going with sushi) into the cooker's teflon bowl. Then we give a 2 minute soak in warmish water. Use your fingers to agitate the rice. Starch will come off the rice and the water will turn milky. Rinse the rice in a strainer until the water runs clear. Dump the strained rice back in the teflon coated bowl that came with the cooker. There is a line under each variety of rice (yeah, still sushi). Put water into the bowl until the water gets to the number of scoops (in this case we still use 2) mark. Put the bowl in the cooker and close the lid. Press the button to scroll through varieties until you get to the variety of rice you are cooking (sushi... still sushi) and press the start button. Sushi rice is about an hour cooking time.
Mostly we have brown rice. It takes 98 minutes cooking time for brown rice. That is enough time to whip up the rest of dinner, and still get in some making out time.
Sushi and jasmine rice are quicker, and also taste amazing. Makes enough rice for dinner for 3 or 4 and lunch leftovers the next day.
The styling is cool so it looks good on the counter, but the handle and light weight make for easy storage out of sight if your sleek AF Zojirushi is not the star of your kitchen. The retractable cord is nice. Cleaning is easy.
Bae is back in the saddle now that her rice cooking is on par with the rest of her dinner making skills!
I was also able to try steel cut oats, setting it at night, using timer function and it is ready for breakfast. Just add milk and sugar/honey.
Design-wise, no complaints, very compact and light. The retractable cord is a plus, less clutter. I like that the plate on the inside is detachable so I am able to wash it easily. The bigger Tiger rice cooker I had before was not detachable.
If there is one thing I would ask, is for Zojirushi to come up with a 5 cup version of this. That would be perfect.
