Top customer reviews
I'm not a native speaker and hesitated to write a review about this product, but when I bought the "Zojirushi Tiffin Box", there was no further information available and I bought the pig in a poke. I hope that I can provide you with some information that might be helpful for you:
This Box has the same quality that you are used to from the other food jars from Zojirushi. It has identical or similar type of bowls, but in a different combination of sizes and functions (e.g. insulations). Some of the bowls are safe for fluids, some are not. If you want to make yourself familiar with the concept of these systems, how they work, the pros and cons, I recommend reading the numerous reviews to the Bento Classic, Mr. Bento and Mrs. Bento on Amazon.
The Tiffin Box, which is renamed after the classic British India lunch box system and usually consists of stapled metal boxes, which get delivered by dabbawalas on their bicycles, comes with the outer container, 3 soup bowls (hot and safe for fluids), a side bowl(room temperature, not safe for fluids), an insulation lid and a nice bag with a spork. Compared to the Classic Bento from Zojirushi the sizes are:
Tiffin Box: Side Bowl 10 oz. / 3 Soup Bowls 9 oz.
Classic: Main Bowl 20 oz. / Side Bowl 14 oz. / Soup Bowl 9 oz.
The outer container of both products has the same diameter. That makes the inner containers interconvertible, which is amazing. The soup bowls of both products are identical and the insulation of the Tiffin box, which is placed between the soup bowls and the side bowl, is the lid from the main bowl of the classic bento.
The color of the inner boxes is dark grey. The Classic Bento lids are a little bit more bluish. The boxes and lids can be distinguished, but look pretty much the same.
I haven't tried every combination so far and it is clear, that not every combination fits, but it's possible to put two soup bowls and the main bowl from the bento classic into the tiffin and fill it with the second insulation on the top. That's what a lot of people were missing in the old models because three warm boxes make it possible to take a more westernized meal with you (e.g. soup, main dish, rice). You can also put the insulation on the first or second soup bowl and use the other one or two for colder food if you want to.
I have uploaded some pictures for you to give you an idea how the bento classic and the new tiffin box look in relation to each other. Hopefully it is going to help you to make the right decision which Bento Box is right for you and fits your needs!
One thing to consider with this, is that other than the 4 bowls, there isn't much room in this sack. It will hold plastic fork & knife and napkin easily. But if he didn't have the thermal pocket on his backpack, he'd need a larger sack than this, to have room for drinks, and maybe a protein bar, etc.
I have Thermos brand hot coffee pump carafes, and they keep coffee hot for a party, 2-3 hours. But a friend had a Zojirushi one, and that coffee was still hot the next DAY! So I knew Zoji was a superior brand, and this Tiffin lived up to that standard. Way warmer than Thermos. We love it.
