Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2-Zombelina (no relation to Thumbelina) loves to dance, especially for her family. She can moonwalk with mummies, boogie with bats, wiggle with werewolves, rock out with rats, spin like a specter, and glide like a ghost. Then her mother decides she should become a real ballerina and sends her to classes. Her instructor, Madame Maladroit, thinks she's superb, but her classmates aren't so sure about the new green student. After much practice, Zombelina is ready for the big recital. Unfortunately stage fright takes over and all she can do is hold out her arms and make a few moans. Shouts of ZOMBIE! ensue and the audience runs away. Luckily the seats are soon filled with Zombelina's family and spooks, so she dances for them. Her mother says, "You're so good, it's scary!" and her teacher proclaims, "DREAD-fully unique!" Back home via broom they have a fun party where Zombelina wraps up the theme of the story, "My performance was haunting tonight!/My family makes everything turn out all right." Crow's rhyming text is ready-made for reading aloud. Idle's colored-pencil illustrations are bursting with details, facial expressions, wonderfully slightly spooky touches, and when appropriate, love. An unusually well-done mix of Halloween, dance, and family that's sure to please many youngsters.-Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NHα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

If Dr. Frankenstein, Tim Burton, or Charles Addams had tried to create a picture-book protagonist, it might have been Zombelina, a little girl zombie who loves to dance. No matter that her body parts are stitched together and sometimes fly off; this greenish girl boogies with the creatures that haunt her house, including mummies, ghosts, skeletons, bats, and rats. Zombelina’s weird world collides with our own when her mother enrolls her in an actual ballet class. Zombelina gives the other girls at the barre the creeps, but the teacher, Madame Maladroit, is impressed by the way Zombelina can (literally) hold her legs over her head. At the final recital, Zombelina’s stage fright scares the audience into fleeing the theater, leaving Zombelina dejected—until her ghastly family and friends fill the room to save the day. The rhyming text (with a few groaner puns) fits the dance-beat theme, while the friendly illustrations offer all kinds of ghoulish surprises. An especially funny horror story with a warm message in its unbeating heart. Grades K-2. --Connie Fletcher

I searched high and low for a zombie book for children because my husband and I are die-hard zombie fans (pun intended), and we don't want our baby girl to be afraid of zombies. When I found Zombelina on Amazon I did a little happy dance and ordered a copy right away. When I got the book in the mail and read it to my daughter for the first time I was overjoyed by the perfection of this book! The rhyming text is oh-so-clever, and the story is too cute. The pictures are also to die for, and the last page just tickled me to death! I love that there's humor that parents can appreciate too.

Zombelina is my new favorite children's book, and I'm going to be reading it to my daughter for years to come! I couldn't be happier that I found this gem of a book. A big thank you to Kristyn Crow for writing such a darling zombie story for children. Well done!

This is one of my four year olds favorite book! The illustrations and storyline are great! Zombelina loves to dance and is enrolled into ballet class. Her unique moves may gross out some of her classmates but her teacher thinks she is great! Zombelina practices everyday and on the day of her recital she gets stage fright...but once she hears her family cheering her on her stage fright disappears!

My 7 year was fascinated by this book last night at bedtime. She hung on my every word as I read it to her and she says her favorite part was "all of it"! I love the sense of family unity that this book portrays and the pictures are lovely!

I was rather surprised by how sweet this book is, considering it's about a zombie ballerina! Lately I've read several ballerina themed kids' books, and Zombelina is definitely the best written and is the most entertaining. The art style is nice, too. Good for Halloween of course, but this book would be a great and rather unique addition to a child's bookshelf to read all year round. It's not a scary book and would be appropriate for even really little kids. Ballet books tend to appeal more to little girls than boys, but I wouldn't be surprised if the zombie theme made this book a hit with many boys!

My almost four year old daughter LOVES this book. She asks me to read it at least three times a day. So far after a week I am not sick of it yet. The artwork is fun to look at and the rhyming is enjoyable instead of just repetitive. My daughter has always loved zombies and ballet. I feel like this book was made just for her.
Thank you Kristen Crow for writing such a wonderful book. Thank you Molly Idle for doing such wonderful artwork so that I am still finding new things as I look through the pages.

"Zombelina" has a cute main character, a young zombie girl who loves to dance. Her parents enroll her in ballet class and though Zombelina tries her best, she finds the other students in her class do not quite take to her strange ways, because she is after all a zombie. Things reach a peak when the recital night arrives, and poor Zombelina finds herself a bundle of nerves, unable to perform. It is only when Zombelina's parents and fellow monster friends arrive that the little zombie is able to calm herself down and give the performance of a lifetime! It is one that is pure zombie-rrific (sorry, couldn't resist) and one that makes Zombelina realize that being unique is not necessarily a bad thing.

Children, especially young girls and boys who enjoy ballet will adore this book that is perfect for Halloween reading. "Zombelina" is also a great complement to another monster ballerina story, Vampirina Ballerina. The illustrations and stories in both are imaginative and pure fun, in fact, these two characters should have a playdate (perhaps a future collaborative project?):-)

This book is absolutely adorable! If you have little girls that like ballet and Halloween, this will be a sure fire hit. We found this book at the library and it's been a bedtime favorite ever since. The rhyme all flows perfectly and Molly Idle's illustrations are as gorgeous as ever.
