My son (HAG) read this book shortly before his 8th birthday. I read it as well so that we could discuss it together.
As other reviews have pointed out, this story is fairly gruesome. There also seems to be a real sense of danger as some of the characters have apparently actually perished. (Most of these types of books won't actually allow any characters to die.) The story moves decently and the plot is easy to follow for that age group.
Here is the big problem: this is not a complete book! I have seen this quite frequently lately, especially in books marketed towards boys 7-12 years old. Because the goal is to make a successful series, publishers don't bother telling a complete story so that the reader has to buy the next book to see what happens. This book is set-up only. Nothing is resolved in any way. Do not buy this book unless you are willing to also buy at least the next book.
I bought this for my 10 year old boy because he absolutely loved the book the last kids on earth
He read that book in a week or less. He couldn't out it down. So I figured this book would be right there along with that one. But my he said he just couldnt get into it. He said it just wasn't very interesting for him. :(
For those of you looking for books to get your sons to read, this is a winner!
I'm reading it next!
Thank you John Kloepfer for writing a book that boys can't put down!
Hang on tight! You’re in for another rollicking ride! Undead Ahead picks up right where its predecessor left off and doesn’t miss a zombified heartbeat. Every enjoyable ingredient from the first installment is intact and fully present in this second helping: the humor, the action, the guts and gore. In fact, Kloepfer has upped the ante with an extra-heaping of ooze, slime, pus, and putrification!
This series is a definite doozy that will be devoured by even the most reluctant of readers. Filled with descriptive words and active verbs, Kloepfer’s writing has an immediacy that brings the story to vivid life. Readers will not only be able to picture the scene, they’ll likely feel they can smell the rotting flesh! And when Zack and company return to the school (where it was parent-teacher night) to encounter throngs of zombified parents and teachers, kids may vicariously live out their most inspired school-day imaginings.
Kloepfer makes full use of each and every setting and venue, as the kids run from the Air Force Base to the school, the bank, the airport, and the nation’s Capital. His creativity and enthusiasm, along with Wolfhard’s awesomely gross and gruesome supporting illustrations, keeps this zombie fest from ever turning rank and stale.Read more ›
