I had heard about this book from a friend and went ahead and spent the money to take a look at it. I have to admit I started with low expectations of reading more of the same. I have always liked all things zombie, but the genre has seemed worn out. The variety of zombie themes in recent games, books, and movies has been limited to having the protagonist face zombies that run instead of walk, or in a different setting, or attempts by movie makers to out-do the last zombie movie in gore and violence.

After the first ten minutes of reading, it dawned on me that I was finally reading a zombie story that was the first truly original concept in this genre I have seen since reading World War Z a few years ago. There is a good story line, but really the most amusing parts of the book come in clever and often funny concepts that stand out like little gems. Some the of explanations of the action from the zombie point of view made me laugh out loud, then pause for a moment and admire the originality of the author. The book sustains this feeling of originality throughout the entire length of the story. Many attempts at Zombie Literature (if there is such a term) fall flat because the originality is only found in the overall concept. For example, I picked up a copy of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" in the book store once after seeing the title. After reading the first few lines, I felt like I had already got the joke, so I didn't bother to keep reading. It might have been great but it just didn't hook me right away.

Zombie Monologues reminded me, in a way, of the way I felt reading "I, Robot" when I got a worn paperback copy back in the 70s. Not that the writing in Zombie Monologues is as great as that classic of science fiction, but more about the feeling that an author has finally managed to hit upon a new and original concept - and sustain that originality throughout the book. That is a rare treat.

Excellent combination of social satire and a take down of some of the hoariest old tropes in the zombie apocalypse genre. Ranges from laugh-out-loud funny to more subversive humor that sneaks up on you later. Highly recommended.

Written intelligently and with a subtle sense of humor, The Zombie Monologues gets into the thoughts and drives (well, OK, ultimately just the one drive) of the undead. Are you curious about what humans go through as they become zombies? Are you aware of the nature of the "disease"? This book has some solid explanations for you, through the notebooks of Dr. Marshall's research laboratory. Marshall has discovered how to communicate with zombies, who of course can no longer speak in the traditional human way.

The book treats its zombie characters with respect, drawing you in to sympathize with them until you are reminded that the zombies would, of course, love to get a bite of your yummy flesh. Yes, this book is humorous, but strangely humane. And the story itself--well, it is quite realistic within its realm. Should zombies be in our future, I expect science would indeed strive to communicate with them. I will keep my eyes open for a sequel, because I think this world is worth another visit.

I grabbed this on the recommendation from a friend, and I quickly found it to be a must-have for my classroom library! My 9th graders will love the unique approach to the supernatural, and I will love pointing out the subtle satire to them. Looking forward to more works from this author.

This is a clever dark comedy featuring the world's first zombie psychiatrist. It's rare that something new (and funny!) comes along in the zombie genre -- this one is fun!
