If there's been a zombie apocalypse and you're road-tripping alone though the wasteland, you could do worse than run into Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), a bourbon-swilling bad-boy butt-kicker with a really cool car. This is where the careful hero of Zombieland, a kid nicknamed Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), finds himself early in the film, and you can hardly blame him for hitching a ride with this swaggering Alpha Male. Still, they have their hands full not only with gibbering zombies but also with two sisters (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) who will stop at nothing to reach a Disneyland-like amusement park in L.A. Although Zombieland gets off to a rocky start with Columbus's overly-cute narration (he's got a list of rules for surviving in the zombie world), it settles into an amusing comedy, regularly interrupted by bouts of blood-letting. The road-trip stuff is enough fun that when the movie does arrive at its version of Disneyland, the air goes out of it a little; sure, there's a giant zombie blowout, with entrails flying, but it's not quite the same. Director Ruben Fleischer keeps the gags coming, although the movie is often funnier in its odd little asides (both Eisenberg and Harrelson are expert at this) than in its official jokes. Comic high point: an interlude at the home of a very famous movie star, who plays himself--and we'll leave the spoiler unspoiled, in case anybody hasn't heard about this funny extended cameo. --Robert Horton

It's hard to cram all the good praise about this film into a couple short paragraphs. It's an amazing film, beside all of its hilarious jokes. The rules of Zombieland take a worthy stab at bad horror filmmakers and demand reality within these cliches. Things like "buckling your seatbelts" and "check the backseat" are not stupid jokes. These are brilliant criticisms of bad zombie stories. We laugh because it's so true how lacking this genre is of some sort of reality. Zombieland created the reality with the rules.
The comedy exceeds beyond one's expectations of a comedy. It is all due to excellent writing and acting. There's barely any slapstick and an absence of cheap gross humor or fart jokes. Zombieland, although it may not seem so, is all about wit and performance humor. Woody Harrelson gives a shockingly great performance in this film, as does Jesse Eisenberg. The writers of this film are intelligent individuals with their hearts attached to their work. I know this because they built so much great comedy in the script, while also maintaining a general emotion level during the film. One part of the flick nearly made me cry, before they softened me right back up again with an appropriate joke for the moment. In the commentary they stated how proud they were that they could generate an emotional scene and then non-abrubtly ease the scene into a hilarious moment. I am proud as well, and have the utmost respect for the writer and director.
I have to stop going on, because I could rave about it all day. The editing, the stylized action...I love everything about Zombieland. I believe some people disagree with all the hype, because the film seems to be made for my generation. I don't believe that middle-aged to older folks will enjoy this film. It is a film that appeals to geeks and nerds, and it is our general consensus that the film straight rocks. On my last note, it makes a great blu-ray. The picture is awesome and the extras are all watchable. Picking up this blu-ray will give you something in your collection that has more replay value than most films out there today.
Director Ruben Fleischer who's know for, well, just about nothing, gives fans of the genre a scary, tense, thrilling, action packed and really funny gift of a movie with Zombieland. The cast is top notch and they all put in top notch performances. And when I say "the cast", I mean pretty much just the 4 leads that don't share much screen-time with anyone other than zombies.
The dialogue and chemistry between Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg is priceless. I dare suggest that it rivals that of the Travolta/Jackson pairing in Pulp Fiction . 99% of the movie is carried solely by Harrelson, Eisenberg, Emma (her hotness will turn you to) Stone and Abigail Breslin (remember that little girl with the tin foil on her head in Signs? ). And they all do a great job of making the movie fun and thoroughly entertaining from start to finish.
The movie deals in the 28 Days Later virus-stricken zombies versus the Night of the Living Dead risen from the grave zombies. The cast meet up while traveling across a country, our country, decimated by a zombie plague. The movie offers an explanation for why the zombie outbreak happened, and includes a hilarious flashback to the time of the outbreak with Eisenberg's character.
What's really cool is most of the characters do what you'd expect them to do if this zany situation ever really occurred. The movie is mostly absent of those moments where you say out loud, "Oh c'mon, no one would ever do that!"...That is until the final moments of the movie where the ladies make a pretty stupid move contrary to the smarts that they showed in the previous 75 minutes of the movie. And in the same sequence the actions of all 4 cast members get a bit silly and over the top.
Still, all in all, it's a great movie. I'm one to complain loudly about Hollywood's addiction to making movies that go well beyond the 2-hour mark. But I was crying for more when the realization struck me that Zombieland was over. The credits were rolling at the 1 hour and 24 minute mark.
When the rumored release of Zombieland 2 comes out in 2011, I might just have to venture out into the Zombieland that is my home town to see it in theaters instead of waiting for Blu Ray. Add Zombieland to your cart...well worth the price of admission!

When the film opens, the zombie fuelled apocalypse is quickly dispensed with during the opening credits (an unknown infection turns people into bloodthirsty zombies and anyone bitten by a zombie becomes a zombie, pretty standard stuff really, but that's not what the film is really about) and we are introduced to our nameless hero, played by Jesse Eisenburg, a college geek who has spent his life being afraid of almost everything, too nervous to take chances and really live, and it is this very nervousness that has kept him alive due to his fear of everything from clowns to bathrooms to always fastening his safety belt when driving. Adapting his fears into a long list of do's and don'ts for survival (which crop up throughout the film in a very clever use of subtitles), our hero and narrator (a very, very knowing, funny and arch voice over) decides to head for Columbus to see if his parents are still alive (he was never really close to his parents and until later in the film he cannot figure out why he really wants to do this). Along the way he meets a short fused redneck in the shape of a very funny Woody Harrelson. Harrelson's character agrees to team up with Eisenberg, and the pair suffer a series of humorous and very bloody encounters before encountering two girls Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin. This foursome eventually team up, realising that they may be the last four people alive on Earth and they need each other, not just to survive but also to truly live.
Zombieland is on the surface a simple comedy that utilises the end of the world to elicit laughs from its audience. And the film works very well on this level, and there is nothing wrong with that, but there is another, equally satisfying film here, as Eisenburgs character finally comes of age in the face of the ensuing apocalypse and realises that he may well have left to late to finally start living his life. Developing an attachment to his three fellow survivors, Eisenburg comes to the conclusion that this is now the only family that he will ever have, and it is his efforts to keep this mis-matched "nuclear family" together that forms the core of this hugely funny, hugely enjoyable and hugely satisfying zom com.
There is also a number of terrific performances within this film, with Harrelson being the most obvious with his slightly over the top but loveable redneck with his violent hatred of zombies (the reason for which we discoverer late on in the film, which makes him are more rounded character) and his love of twinkies, as well as Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin turning in terrific performances, but this is really Eisenbergs movie, as he is the heart and soul of this film.
No one gets a name, with characters referring to each by the places they come from or are heading to so as not to get to attached, just in case (Eisenberg is known as Columbus, whilst Harrelson becomes Tallahassee, Breslin Little Rock and Stone Wichita) but even without this most obvious of character conventions, you really do care about this slightly dysfunctional "family", and coupled with a lot of laugh out loud genuine belly laughs and some really bloody violence, often in the same scene, as well as a truly outstanding cameo from a Hollywood comedy legend that is almost a total scene stealer, this film is not just as good as Shaun of the Dead, it may well be its superior.
