The way I've decided to use them is I fold the corner of the sheet into a "v" shape that is just a little larger than the grip area of these clips in order to give them just a little thicker material to hold onto. I then attach the clips with the stake facing up, and rotate it over to dig them into the sand. In doing so the clip ends up being covered under the bed sheet and I think it helps hold the sheet firmer.
The springs seem firm enough to hold their pressure for a decent amount of time, and I'm sure that there are a few ways I could increase the holding strength as the springs weaken over time though I wouldn't hesitate to reorder these same beach clips when I need to. For the cheap price and how much I prefer using these than my old method of laying on the bed sheet on the sand these are a "no brainer" in my book and I would definitely recommend to others.
