Updated..these fixtures have a defect in them where after a month or more of daily use they start turn off for no reason. A slight tap on the top turns them back on but then they eventualy turn off again. Like there is some kind of short circuit problem. All that I've owned develop this problem. Very frustrating!
Update: Feb 13, 2018. We just go this in December 2017 ( about 2 months old) and yesterday it started smoking. It filled our crabitat with smoke and fumes (our house too). Our crabs are all okay, because we happened to be home. We acted fast, unplugged it and got it outside. It scares me to think what might have happened had we not been home. Not only could it have killed our pets, but it could have burned our house down. I am very upset, and disappointed. I imagine the company will replace it, or Amazon will as they have good Customer Service. I just worry about trusting this again.
As a side note, I bought the 24" hood, and it accommodates the 22" T5-HO bulbs. This hood came with a 5.0 bulb, but I had to buy the 10.0 bulb for my beardie. My local PetsMart didn't carry any T5 bulbs or hoods, so I had to make an educated guess to correctly pair up the bulb with the hood. Hope this makes the process easier for other buyers!
Product arrived intact with a free T5 for tropical species included. Color temperature is very natural, the light is very bright. Some species might benefit from having some cover from the light from natural plants I would imagine. We have some sprouts growing in the tank, I will try to update with photos of their growth.
Our Red Foot Tortoise immediately started showing increased activity after having not had UVB for two weeks (vitamin D from diet otherwise seemed insufficient). The spectrum provided by the bulb appears to make the environment more interesting. Very satisfied with the build quality - very sleek. Lower profile than I had expected. T5 bulbs are the future.
