Thus far, it has been simple and easy to use. It was a great, inexpensive option and the crabs can be found hanging out on the log right near the heater. This will save them in winter.
The large is 18"x8", meant for 50-60 gallon tanks.
The medium is 8"x12" meant for 30-40 gallon tanks.
The small is 6"x8" meant for 10-20 gallon tanks, and the mini is meant for up to 5 gallons.
Hope that helps.
As for the product, I've never had a problem with the Zoomed heat pads. Just remember to use a thermoSTAT at all times when using one of these products as they can reach dangerously high temperatures when unregulated.
The first thing that caught my eye was the price. When purchasing my last under the tank heater (UTH) I was upsold on a rather expensive heater that the store owner swore would never get too hot and always be at the perfect temperature. Well they were right in that it never got too hot, in fact it didn't get hot enough. I paid over double for that heater.
The reptitherm UTH by Zoomed is a budget friendly solution for keeping your reptiles at optimum temperature. I use it for leopard geckos but in the past have used it for snakes as well. It adheres easily to the bottom of a glass tank (remember to put it on the outside of the tank and smooth out any bubbles). The downside is once it is installed onto a tank it cannot be removed and reused safely. That really isn't an issue though unless something happens to your tank or you upgrade (which you might want to do but chances are you'll need a bigger size of the UTH as well).
This heater gets REALLY hot. I mean... Intense. Potentially too hot for your scaled friend (or feeder insects). This heater works well with a thermostat (I use this particular one: Jump Start MTPRTC Digital Controller Thermostat For Heat Mats, Seed Germination, Reptiles and Brewing). You'll more than likely need some type of thermostat as with the UTH under the tank, proper air circulation, and tile for flooring in the tank the surface temperature of the tile was reading 106 degrees (f) (don't worry, it was tested without any animals in it). Previously I had used this same type of heater (without realizing how hot it got) and the heat ended up cracking the bottom of my glass (so seriously, get a thermostat to keep it under control).
Sometimes the little pads that come with this heat aren't quite enough elevation for the tank for good air flow. I purchased bigger ones at my local hardware store.
They don't get too hot, which is a plus. On the other hand, they can stain melamine or desks, so I tend to buy a piece of tile and put them on the tile instead of directly connected to the tank. Also, water + glass + heat = cracked glass. if you attach it directly to the tank glass you have to be very careful of moisture.
I also recommend you cycle these on/off with a timer. If they are on all the time it can get pretty warm -- the temperature of the pad itself is like 110F, so keep that in mind.
Ordered this tank heater for our Granddaughters to help keep their hermit crabs warm and cozy during our cold Northeast Winter. Been 3 months since ordering and we have been into the low teens on several nights so the heater is working as we had hoped that it would.
