Once again, i was thrust into an open world that provided me with almost unlimited possibilities to explore the joy and struggles of owning and running a zoo. With the available expansions, you're given a multitude of extra animals from all over the world and throughout time, including DINOSAURS and MARINE ANIMALS!. That is probably the best part about this game. i was always an evil child and I still am, so a good chunk of my time was spent allowing dinosaurs and predatory animals to attack smaller animals and zoo patrons
When you do actually try to run a zoo like you are meant to do, it is still a pretty awesome game. You have total control of the customization of your zoo but there still are some rules so that you get the full experience. For examples, some animals are required to have certain amount of space in order to thrive. The game won't stop you from making a smaller enclosure, but the damn cheetahs will have messages constantly pop up demanding you provide them with more space. It can be a little frustrating at time, but in the end it is all worth it. The game even provides goals for your zoo such as releasing animals into the wild, breeding programs, and visitor happiness. In story mode, these goals allowed you access to more animals but I'm always the type to jump into sandbox mode and get everything right away. I lost the copy I bought, so I may purchase it again real soon when i get a new desktop
TL;DR: You won't be disappointed by going back into the past with this game.
This is a wonderful game. As a parent, grandparent, and teacher I highly recommend this to anyone with children ages 5 to 95.
Even the adults can enjoy playing the challenge games and they may learn a few things also.
The four expansion packs add the following:
-African Adventure (African animals, Jeep Vehicle tours, Safari themed items)
-Endangered Species (Help house and breed endangered species, Sky Tram Tours, Elevated Paths)
-Marine Mania (Marine animals, Train Animals, Swim with Animals)
-Extinct Animals (Dig for fossils, Do research, Bring back extinct species)
This game is perfect for those 9 and older, if your child is computer savvy I'd go as young as 7 if they are a good reader. The tutorials will run your through the basics, enclosure building, and will continue to add until you get up to speed.
This is an excellent game at an excellent price.
There were three things I disliked about this game. One is the photography missions. They often require that you take a picture of an animal doing a certain action. Unfortunately, there's no way to make an animal do anything. You just have to sit there and wait for them.
Second is that there weren't enough missions for me! I Even with all the expansions there's barely enough to keep me happy. So it's worthwhile to buy all the expansions. the game wouldn't be very long without them.
Third, there's no way to sell extra animals. You can adopt them out to other zoos or release them to the wild, but you don't make any money for that like in other zoo games. It's a little bit of a bummer because you have to pay lots to get each animal, and running a zoo is expensive.
Don't take me wrong though, I really like this game. It runs great on my Windows 7 machine. The graphics are good. There's free extra content to download on their web site. There are lots of content built into the game. Most importantly, the game play is fun!
