The processor/pedal is great! The sounds are amazing and you can do a lot. The issue is... it's really complicated. Not being a professional musician or sound specialist, I struggled. A lot. It's just overkill for what I wanted and made it so difficult getting the sound I wanted to get to... it just wasn't worth it. Just understanding how the entire thing worked took a lot of time and all my brain power. In the end I mostly just circled through their pre-set sounds... and even that wasn't easy since it's not really what they intend for you to do with this thing.
I swapped it out for a Boss GT-1 which is a bit less flexible but way easier to operate, and couldn't be happier.
Pros
- Super high quality. This thing is solid... the parts move/work really well. You won't be disappointed in the build.
- Very flexible... there's almost nothing you cannot do with this thing if you have the time, know how, and put your mind to it.
- Feels like it's for a much higher quality musician than I am
Cons
- Just too complicated for an amateur. While the price point was good... too good thinking about it... the result was a product that I just wasn't prepared to master.
This is a great product. My experience with multi-effect units these past few years has been limited to the Digitech RP-250 pedal (old hardware, discontinued) and the Guitar Rig VST (software solution). I've had frustrations with the balance of sound quality vs latency using ASIO drivers in the software so I wanted a dedicated multi-effect unit.
It has great-sounding preset patches, but I feel they don't cover the full range of what this thing can do. It's pretty easy to create patches on the unit directly, I like the granularity of the knobs - but it's way more comfortable to plug it into your computer with a USB cable and use Guitar Lab to design your sounds.
You have 7 slots to fill up with various effects (each takes either 1 or 2 slots) and a bucket of processing power that fills up by a percentage with every effect that you add - a particular reverb may take 1 slot and 15% processing power, while another type is 2 slots and 10%, etc...it's way easier to track processing power on your computer screen.
A couple of notes:
- The pedal has its own effects, you cannot just assign it to modulate an existing effect, you have to add a "Volume pedal", "Drive Pedal", "Reverb Pedal", etc...to your effect chain in order to use it.
- The USB cable does not come with the unit, it's a micro-B type of connector.
- The headphone jack is 1/4" (6.35mm, the big ones), you need to use an adapter if using 1/8" headphone plug (pretty standard historically, but I know newer devices have 1/8")
1. It is certainly sturdily built.
2. Connecting it to my laptop was easy, it does take a while for the information to load from the unit.
3. The firmware was already up-to-date, which is a rare out-of-the-box experience these days.
4. Downloading the new AMP, Cab, and effects software t the G3Xn was very easy.
5. As others have stated most of the pre-installed patches are not really so usable in the real world, but they do serve to show what can be done.
6. Overall the modeled sounds seem very good so far.
7. There is a more than moderate learning curve for programming your own chains of Amps, Cabs, and effects on the Zoom unit itself. Frankly, this is mostly due to the manual being useless for any guidance with this. Most of the YouTube demos are also not good for helping you with this.
8. Once I had successfully programmed my default preferred AMP+Cab+Reverb+Effects the unit performed very well and bank/patch scrolling vs stomp mode is very easy.
So, overall a great start marred only by the very poor manual and YouTube demos for programming.
I will update my review once I have spent a few weeks with the Zoom G3Xn.
OK, so now after a couple of weeks: The more I play with the Zoom G3Xn the more impressed I am. Programming on the unit itself is still a pain, but once you plug it into your laptop and use the Zoom Guitar Lab app it becomes so very much easier. Spend the time to load and learn the Zoom Guitar Lab application on your laptop.
I am upgrading this to 5-stars.

I bought the G3XN planning to use it solely as an effects unit in the effects loop of my tube amp (Orange OR15). It works perfectly for that because the effects are high quality and very low noise. I can use a single patch in stompbox mode and toggle individual effects on and off, or switch to patch mode and switch between entire patches (or entire banks of patches), switching all of my effects instantly.
The surprise was how good the amp and cab modeling is. Whether I use a modeled amp on the G3XN into the power amp of my OR15 and into my guitar cab, or use a modeled amp and cab with a full-range flat response amp and speaker or headphones, it’s easy to get a really nice sound from clean all the way to extreme high gain. You do have to dial in each amp, just like with real amps, and make sure your cab settings are appropriate (for example, turn the mic on with headphones or an FRFR amp).
The built-in patches seem to be aimed more at demonstrating the capabilities of the unit rather than providing truly useful settings. They’re all way over the top for whatever they’re designed to do. For example, the high gain settings have way too much delay and most have distortion pedals or boosts on by default. I’ve achieved far better sounds by dialing in the amp model the way I like and then adding effects, the same way you would with real amps and stompboxes.
I think that speaks to the quality of the effect and amp modeling, because the various effects and amps work together just like the real thing. And this thing actually has the headroom to take pedals well - I tried using my Turbo Rat, which can put out a ton of volume and drive any amp input into distortion, and the amp models distorted like real amps (but the input of the Zoom did not - it took the higher voltage signal with out any issues).
Also, these N-series models, unlike the previous Zoom multi-effect units, uses impulse responses so they sound much more like using a real amp and cab than earlier products.
To summarize, this works perfectly as a multi-effects unit with a real amp, and has replaced almost all of my pedals, but it also works surprisingly well as a full amp and cab modeler. I would have no problem using this on its own live, whether on its own direct into a PA or in combination with a real guitar amp.
