I often make extended recordings and was tired of replacing the two AA batteries every other day. I then discovered that the H5 can be powered through its USB connector using a cheap iPhone portable charger and ordinary USB cable with a USB mini connector on the Zoom end. I first tried it with this 6000 mAh charger (pictured) and it used up less than 1/3 of the capacity in eight hours. I then tried it with a small 3,200 mAh charger by Anker and it worked fine with that as well. I'll leave it to you to run your own endurance test, but expect that it would meet most needs. I'm now very happy with my new Zoom H5.

Out of the box, it should take but a few minutes to configure the unit to your preferred format. One push recording, with a separate gain knob for the mic and one knob for each of the XLR inputs at the bottom of the unit. With the 32GB SanDisk "Class 10" SD card I have installed, my unit takes almost exactly 10 seconds to "cold start" from powered off to ready to record, which isn't too bad. For the price, the fidelity is--in my opinion--outstanding. Compared to the ZOOM H2n, the noise floor is markedly lower, especially at high gain settings. The standard X/Y mic in the H5 has impressively good dynamics and solid stereo imaging. Even fitted with a windscreen (which I suspect partially negates the shock-mounting of the X/Y capsules), it is pretty easy to hand-hold this unit and get serviceable recordings. And with proper "Neutrik" connector-style mic preamps--which can be used as individual mono inputs or as a stereo pair--this unit is very viable for working with external microphones, although I've not used the H5 with an external mic enough to get any sense of how long a mic requiring phantom power can be sustained with just two AA batteries.

If you're already familiar with the H2n, you'll find yourself in familiar territory. The display, menu system interface/layout, and file-system structure of the H5 is virtually identical to the H2n. While this unit inherits the fidelity and much of the versatility of the ZOOM H6 (including full compatibility with its line of mic attachments, e.g., the SGH-6 "shotgun" mic), it does away with much of the "project" file weirdness and mixing functionality that many people found unnecessary (or just plain frustrating) in the H6.

I love this thing! The external controls make quick adjustments very easy, the battery life is exceptional, and the interchangeable input modules can better prepare the H5 for any situation.
Even the stock XY inputs can capture high quality audio. I tested the H5 last night at an open-mic night at the local coffee shop using the XY inputs to capture live performances and I'm very happy with the results.

Very happy with the Zoom H5. It has worked well in multiple shooting scenarios - self shot video (recorded onto the SD card in the Zoom plus connected directly into the camera's mic jack - having a viable backup is no joke), wedding video shoot to capture the bride and groom's vows as well as a musical performance, as well as straight audio recording from a mixer for podcast production, and live recording of meetings to ensure everything was captured for the later transcription of the meeting minutes. This thing is very versatile and easy to throw into a backpack and carry around as needed - it's great. I will be traveling internationally soon, and plan to bring a travel XLR microphone with me to record podcasts per the podcast schedule while away. I've already tested this and it works great. Finally, I don't do many field interviews (yet) but will definitely have this recorder with me when I do them. The interchangeable capsules really extend the usability as well - I have purchased the H6 Shotgun Mic capsule and used it successfully for some video shoots as well - very happy with all of the results I've gotten so far. Highly recommended!

I toyed with the idea of getting the H6, but decided it was overkill for my needs (DSLR filmaking). So far I see this as a great upgrade from my H4N. I love the improved layout of controls, the strartup time has been drastically improved, and love the new modular design of the built-in mics. I also really like the individual gain knobs. So far, battery life doesn't seem that much improved, and it still has the issue of losing clips if the battery dies while recording (poor design Zoom). I like the fact that Zoom has gone to universal USB external power instead of their proprietary power supply.

Zoom got it mostly right this time, a straightforward manually controlled recorder. There is no "flashing ring" function like the H4 that confused users into thinking they were recording when they weren't. The phantom powering is improved. I got 4 hours out of two alkaline batteries with phantom power on, a pair of Sony 7506 headphones and the display lit. If you select the option to keep the display lit, it will turn off when batteries are nearly dead. This is a handy warning that you're about to lose power. The stereo mic module is not great. The efforts to isolate it from contact noise were not very successful. It distorts on high frequencies when level readings are below peaking. That distortion is not there when using a good outboard mic. I hope Zoom will come out with a cap to cover the module contacts.
