Editorial Reviews
From the Label
FZ's version of a basic stripped-down rock record; uncomplicated and completely compelling. Alongside sharp satirical tracks like "Disco Boy" and "Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station" (which launched the onstage chant "Show me your thumb if you're really dumb") come between-the-eyes instrumentals like "Black Napkins," "Friendly Little Finger" and the title track. This disc is also the home of "The Torture Never Stops," a doomsaying blues unlike anything else in the Zappa catalogue.

Briefly, "Zoot Allures," (or indeed, the "Zappa" style of composite musical melodrama as a whole), intermingles a certain anthropological, or indeed societal, pathos with a uniquely parallel unisonant structural design, based on his clearly emblematic and euphonious concepts. Like a piquant peanut butter and jelly sandwich --with extra jelly-- for the ear, the listener's (that's YOU) personal audile delectation effect, (due entirely to Zappa's complex incorporation of whimsical lyrical elements), is further compounded when taking into account the sophisticated musicology itself. Without going into all of the philosophical or technical minutiae, the product, (disc: Zoot Allures), with its facetious consonant style, actually adds performance superfluity to what would customarily have been considered an auditory raillery limit. With respect to these specific music/humor objectives, Zappa has once again performed absolutely admirably. Bravo Frank!
I'll probably wind up working in a gas station and eating dinner with black napkins....running into the disco boy...
It's Zappa.
I'm content.
Thanks
If you are not really a fan, but enjoy heavier music, boy is this for you. It sizzles and humms like a ufo cooking cows with a laser beam.
If you want to mellow down and get dirty...this is a good album for you. It has a couple of live tracks that capture Zappa at his magic moments. The emotion that melts and cuts through his solos is moving. Very dark and goovin' this album is, I would say. And TERRY BOZZIO does killer job on the skins.
This album is easy on the ears and fat with coolness. The TORTURE NEVER STOPS is one of my favorites along with Black Napkins. ENJOY!!!
