I did not expect such a wonderful, strong, well written female lead. I did not expect the main characters to not have a forced, shoehorned in romantic subplot. I did not expect the best Disney movie since Lilo and Stitch, and easily my favorite since The Lion King. Everything about this movie is wonderful, from the animation to the voices to the music to the story to the messages.
I did not expect to so completely love the main characters, who are so well written and fully realized that when the movie's tearjerker moments hit you they don't feel forced because you really believe these characters. Judy dealing with her latent mistrust of foxes, Nick dealing with society's view of foxes, and how both of these characters overcome their past trauma and grow is fantastic and some of the best character writing I've seen in a major release.
I can't possibly say enough good things about this movie. If I DO have a negative, it's that from now on all animated movies (and most live action ones) will fall short of this film's strengths.
If Frozen is a 8/10, Big Hero 6 is a 9/10, and Wreck-It Ralph is a 10/10, Zootopia is an 11/10
I purchased the ultimate collectors edition set which is compete with (4) copies ; blu-Ray, 3D version, regular DVD and digital copy. Being that the price difference was only about $3 bucks more than the Blu-Ray alone I went ahead and bought the collectors edition. Having 5 kids all under 11 they're bound to destroy one of the copies, so I have (3) backups if it happens. They clarity of this film is high definition 1080p when watching it on blu-Ray or 3D blu-ray versions. The regular dvd's picture quality and sound was pretty good too. Being that I've watched it countless times since its arrived I can almost not see the difference ha! I don't want to spoil the movie for you but I can tell you ... There will be plenty of laugher, this film was hallerious and fun for the whole family. I highly recommend you purchase this film and some popcorn, you nor your family will be disappointed.
This movie is very family friendly... there really isn't anything inappropriate in it in terms of language. The only things that some parents might have an issue with are the few scenes of cartoon violence... there's one scene where the main character hits another one in the face... this actually happens a couple times in the movie, once during a scene where the characters are young and a bully attacks her, and another where the main character is training in a police academy and she is practicing in a boxing ring. There is also a scene at the beginning where the main character is in a play and has fake "blood" coming out of her in the form of ribbons and squeezing a ketchup bottle. There isn't any suggestive language at all.. you hear "shut up" once or twice. The last thing I'd say is Zootopia's celebrity performer "Gazelle" has an outfit that is similar to something that the person who does her voice would wear (Gazelle is voiced by Shakira... google her if you don't know who she is.. or just google zootopia gazelle, you'll see what I mean).
Like I said, it's a cute movie, funny at many times. Not many kids movies make me laugh out loud, but this one does. I really enjoy it, even after seeing it 100000000 times in the past two months.
