Perfect every day PC
I'm a huge fan of this PC. Setup was simple, I chose to do a fresh Windows8 install (very easy to do from settings menu). I then added a 750GB drive in the extra SATA slot (which is a huge bonus). Now I've got my O/S running on the 64GB SSD (50% free space), and all of my music, pictures, documents on the 750GB drive. Computer is whisper quiet, I don't think I've heard the fan kick on yet to be honest.I am using just the installed 2GB of RAM, and it seems to run fine with it. Right now I have 6 Chrome tabs open as well as iTunes. It's nice knowing that there are two DIMM slots, so I can always bump the RAM up if needed.I got this at $199, but I've seen it go lower, it should be a no brainer if you're wanting a compact PC. 4x USB 3.0 ports, HDMI out, SPDIF out, nice onboard audio DAC, plenty of ports/connections.I think my favorite thing is boot up time, I think I've clocked it at around 10 seconds, which is ridiculous. This thing blows away any past PC I've had.

I had bad luck with 2 mini boxes that I purchased using the Intel Cherry Trail processor with integrated graphics. First one, a Minix, received 3 graphics driver updates in a weeks time. There were 3 yellow exclamation marks on graphics lines in the device manager and it appeared to need a new driver to fix it. I backed up the old drivers, just in case. The last update left the box dead. Wouldn't even try to boot to the BIOS. Searched the web and the Minix forum, but found no joy on what to do when the power light is pale green instead of vibrant blue. Using the reset was the only option and if it doesn't work, basically you're screwed! Get a new box. Second purchase (what was I thinking!), a Nexbox with the same Cherry Trail processor with integrated graphics. It arrived DOA. No idea what the problem was with it.

So, I decided to go a completely different route this time. Wanted a different processor. I got the barebones box because I hate Windows Home and didn't want to fool with it. The open box price was great. I have my old SATA hdd from my ASUS laptop and I can install the OS I want and have the amount of RAM I need. Amazing, the ZBox can use up to 16gb!

As everyone says, it's as quiet as a church mouse. I have a performance monitor for the motherboard and the temps don't fluctuate much (all fahrenheit): cpu 244, gpu 242 and main board 222, the fan is spinning away at over 2500 rpm (with variance at higher rpm's).

Had some issues with the internet dropping. And the simple solution for me was moving the ZBox closer to the router and repositioning the antenna. The change in distance is little more than 3 feet. I wouldn't have thought that short a distance would make a difference, but it did.

Installing the RAM and SATA hdd was easy. One little problem, Amazon sent the wrong ram. I ordered 8gb and they sent 4gb. New ram will be here later today (April 28th) and until it gets here I'm using the 4gb. Runs great with 4gb. I'll get to see if there's any difference when the 8gb arrives. And I can report the difference is negligible. You can't have too much ram, but you can have too little. Just depends on how you're going to use the ZBox, 4gb may be just fine for you.

The UEFI/BIOS is robust. Not going to try overclocking the ZBox, but looks like the settings are there if you have the courage to try it. I use to do such things, but with a quad core, and so much ram available, I see no reason to try it. And after installing CPUID, I'm amazed, thrilled and delighted to report the cpu is running as fast as it can. CPUID reports a core speed of 2239-2241 mhz and change! I was not expecting that! The Minix pc I had to return ran at the lowest speed available. [EDIT: During an update where MS wants to finish the updates during a re-boot, CPUZ 1.37 caused a BSOD and trashed the ZBox. No way to boot up or get into BIOS. I tried everything, but another update kills my pc. Ordering another one of these. Not the pc's fault. Setting updates NOT to update.]

Boot up is slow. The reason it's so slow is a pause during boot to give you a change to press the delete key (to enter BIOS) or F8 (for more boot options). I'm amazed the F8 option is there. You can probably change that in the BIOS, but I'm content to have those options there and I'll put up with the longer boot up time.

Never seen a USB and sd card reader using the same access point. A great idea and it's no problem to use. It gives us another 3.0 port and it's a space saver on the motherboard. Ordered a hub that uses the 3.0 USB-type C port putting it to good use. So many 3.0 USB ports available. It's one of the reasons I picked it.

I purchased a new 3.0 USB thumb drive with new class 10 micro sd cards. Couldn't get the UEFI/BIOS to see them. And when it could see them, it couldn't see my SATA hdd. After playing around with the UEFI/BIOS settings trying to get all drives to play nice, I decided to take out the motherboard battery to rest everything back to factory default settings. I decided to reformat the hdd, delete the partitions and rebuild mbr. Then everything was seen in UEFI/BIOS.

I include the following info in case someone else has the same Windows installation problem with their barebones purchase. After searching the web, I find I'm not the only one to have the problem with Windows returning an error msg that it can't install on the selected partition. Found lots of bad and useless information about why this error msg is received and what can and can't be done about it. I found the simple solution on a youtube video. The install went smoothly by following the instructions on how to change mbr to gpt during the Windows 10 install. Setting the hard drive to gpt first didn't work. Had to start out mbr and be changed during the install. That's the way it was for me anyway.

Video plays as expected, no problems there. Mouse and keyboard recognized immediately during Windows install.

Amazon customer service has been great through all the problems, with the Minix box dying and the Nexbox arriving DOA. First one I purchased was received April 5th and I just received the ZBox on April 26th. What a month, less than a month!

I was surprised and thrilled Customer Service sent the 8gb ram stick before I returned the 4gb one I received. Many thanks to them for that. And thanks for refunding the expedited shipping charges for the second purchase of this item! Pray you never get the BSOD during updates!

I'm very impressed with the ZBox and wish I had found it before I purchased those other boxes. As you can well imagine!

I bought this to replace my wife's rather ancient laptop that was giving up the ghost (we were using it with an external monitor and keyboard). She uses it for surfing the web, watching video (streaming from the web or home video stored on the pc), light editing of photos (mostly cropping) and basic word processing/spreadsheets (I loaded an older version of Office that I own).

For this type of use, this is a great pc. Setup was quick and painless and we've had no problems so far, although it's only been a couple of weeks.

Pros

- Virtually silent. My wife has yet to hear the fan come on. Or if it has, she can't hear it.
- Quick. It boots up in about 8 seconds. Programs load in just a few seconds. The SSD helps make things very snappy.
- Plenty of USB3 ports (although I'd have liked to have one in the front, rather than all 4 being in the back.) The front USB port is
USB2
- Tiny. Fits in a little cubby in her desk organizer.
- Complete pc. I was looking at several bare bones kits, but this is ready to go out of the box. No need to buy (and install)
memory, hard drive or OS.

Cons/things to be aware of.

- Not powerful. Quick does not necessarily mean powerful. I don't think you'd want this if you wanted to play games on it or do
heavy photo/video editing.
- Only 64 GB of storage on the SSD. You can always add an external drive or inexpensive flash drive to increase storage if you
need to.
- No WIFI. If you need WIFI, be sure to buy a USB WIFI adapter.

I didn't subtract anything from my rating over the listed cons because they don't impact us in any way.

Overall, this is a perfect pc for what we use it for.

So far, so good... This is a building-blocks kit for someone with some technical skills. Add a Hard or Solid State drive, some RAM, and an operating system. In my case, I had some RAM from a laptop upgrade, a relatively small solid state drive [ditto], and a retail version of Windows 7. You will also need a portable USB optical drive if you need to load stuff via CD/DVD.
Some tips:
1) To get into BIOS, hit delete on keyboard REPEATEDLY as system powers up. Boot menu accessed using F8 the same way.
2) Windows 7 does NOT come with native USB3 support - you'll be faced with an unresponsive keyboard and mouse as you try to load the OS. There are workarounds using a bootable USB stick version of Win7 and custom modification of boot.wim and install.wim but they are involved, take time, and require access to another PC.
3) Windows 8.x and 10 load much easier.
4) Use of the Intel Driver Update Utility helps later...
Pros:
a) Seems like good value for the price, small, clean design [and easy to work on] with a fair number of USB ports [all except 1 are USB3]
b) 3 video display port types, plus 4K support, plus optical audio output.
c) Ideal for my intended use as a Home Theater PC, especially if you use an outboard USB3-based hard drive for media storage....
d) Drivers as shipped are on a CD, and are fairly up to date as this is written.
e) 2 year warranty is a nice touch... though any "burn-in" failures will occur sooner.
Cons:
a) Documentation lacking some key info, like BIOS/boot keys. [See edit below, this may be outdated info now]
b) Drivers as shipped are on a CD, so a scramble for optical drive may be needed or transfer to USB stick required.
c) CPU can support 16GB, so limiting RAM to 8 not wise. Not an issue at the moment, but room for growth would be nice..

Summary: NOT a turnkey PC, but good value for technically proficient.

Currently running Windows 10 on it now... no issues with install. Will update if hardware issues arise during burn-in period.

Edit/Update on January 9th, 2016:
1) First off, clarification and caution: Amazon and/or buyers have posted reviews for wrong product under this SKU. Zotac uses VERY similar model numbers, with some units coming with a hard drive+RAM+OS. This model [ZBOX-BI323-U] is the barebones system that requires work on part of buyer... Please read product description carefully, and do not rely on descriptions in reviews.
2) The combination USB & SD card slot on front of unit realistically can only use non-cabled products - the combination port opening makes plugging in a cabled USB item dicey, connection-wise, due to lack of mechanical support. That said, USB sticks and SD cards work just fine.
3) As an IT person, you get to see stuff sometimes go bad, typically within the first month or so of use [aka burn-in period]. Barring a major design flaw, you only get the occasional "sample defect". This edit is being written after exchange of first unit, which developed intermittent contact issues on the USB 3 ports... After a few days powered on, with no physical contact, my external drive would disconnect, then reconnect, etc. Swapping cables and enclosure did not cure problem, but turning everything off overnight [allowing system to cool completely] would fix issue for a few days... I did not drop any stars from rating, as I see this as a one-off issue...
4) As a consequence of the product exchange, I discovered that first unit was a bit behind re firmware. My original power-up screen did NOT have the Zotac logo with the keyboard hints for BIOS and Startup device - this unit [and presumably others] now do.

Update: May 28, 2016

Sadly, I have to pull any/all recommendation to buy Zotac for while, until Quality Control and customer service issues improve.
Background:
I'm on my second unit, with the first one's rear USB3 ports failing shortly after purchase. I put first failure down to burn-in issues, which as a full-time IT professional, I see [even from big-name makes from Dell & HP]. No biggie.
- After about 4 months, second unit developed same symptoms
- i.e. an AC-powered external hard drive plugged into either of the two rear USB3 ports starts having intermittent disconnect/reconnect issue. Unit works perfectly when connected to a variety of other hardware, including long-duration connection to BluRay player, home server, etc. AND to front USB port of returned unit and this one. So basically, I only have one USB3 port instead of 3. And with drive plugged into front, I've lost access to SD card reader.
- I tried Customer Support chat route early in April, with a LONG session resulting in my being cut off as help desk closed for day. Some business travel meant I didn't have a chance to follow up for weeks, but an issue raised by tech [BIOS update] was addressed, no change.
- Put in a request on May 8 for an RMA - no response to this point, almost one month later.

I have a working system [for how long?], but crippled. Two year warranty appears to be empty promise. Sad, because I really like system, put i a LOT of work to get to this point, but no longer have any confidence in durability...

I had one of these before and the fan seized up so I figured I might as well upgrade to a newer version.
I spent the better part of a day trying to get windows 7 on which does not natively support usb 3 so the setup froze to a halt.
I tried injecting new drivers in the setup.wim file and nothing worked, so I installed Ubuntu and it installed without any issues at all.
Awesome video and digital spdif audio , loving this unit.
Highly recommended with linux

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes a powerful media box
Reviewed in Canada on February 6, 2017
Powerful little device for its size. I got the model with no ram/hdd or OS. I had an SSD and 2 4GB RAM sticks laying around for me to use. The packaging was great, and it was so easy to open up and put the RAM and hard drive in, but, the cover needed a bit of force to slide back into place.

My main reason for purchasing this was to install Linux with Kodi and use it as a media box/HTPC. At first I had issues installing a barebones Linux installation because when you use a USB stick to boot, it shows up as the first HDD device (/dev/sda) which means your hard drive becomes the 2nd drive (/dev/sdb) during installation. Then when you remove the stick and reboot, the HD then becomes the first (SDA). This is a bit confusing and I couldn't get around it. But I tried installing Lubuntu 16.04 and it worked perfectly. The Lubuntu installer recognized the hard drive as SDA so installation was easy. From there I customized it to boot into Kodi and all went well. I didn't have to install any drivers at all, everything worked right away.

There's no comparison to the Android boxes used as media boxes. The ZBox just blows them away in performance. My old Android box had a Quad-Core S812 chip with 2GB of RAM and should have been much quicker than it is. This ZBox with the N3150 CPU is a beast in comparison. My desktop loads super fast and goes straight into Kodi in about half the time than the Android box did. Kodi also runs much faster and smoother than ever before. My subscription updates take seconds instead of minutes.

I also installed Chrome browser to surf the net and works great!

Very happy with this purchase!
