The appearance of an ambassador from Kyabra, Zoe’s ancestral homeland, sparks a journey of self-discovery. She learns some astonishing facts about herself, her grandfather, and the widening possibilities for her future. The threat of civil unrest in Petrella, however, curtails Zoe’s education and she decides to return to offer her services to her adopted home and family. Yet even her return journey throws up more complications than anyone could have predicted, and once home, Zoe finds herself faced with a dreadful choice – one that will change her life forever.
Zoysana’s Choice is a rite of passage novel that is rich in color and atmosphere. The author’s descriptions of Zoe’s upbringing, the emergence of her talents, and the intricacies of court life and governance make for a vibrant, intriguing and absorbing read. The novel teems with credible and interesting characters, and the significant events are handled with confidence and authority. The differences between Petrellan culture and Kyabran add notes of mysticism that really help make this world come alive. I am also intrigued by the fact that this book – the first Petrellan novel to be published—is actually the fourth in what will be a retrospectively published series. The idea of reading a series “backward” is unusual, and I will watch for the others with interest.
I would highly recommend Zoysana’s Choice, which is a clean read, to both YA and adult readers; anyone, in fact, who enjoys novels containing elements of fantasy, adventure, political intrigue and mystery.
Zoe was found as a child living alone in the forest. She grew up in the castle, where she’s appreciated by everyone for her own merit. Her peaceful life is threatened when conflict arises in the king’s family, and she’ll have to decide where her loyalties lie.
Zoe goes back to her homeland, Kyabra, where she learns more about the ancient culture she is part of, and the hidden talents she has. Civil unrest brings her back to the castle she grew up in, but the cost for stopping a war is enormous, and Zoe is faced wih a dreadful choice.
I really liked Zoe. She was independent, resourceful, clever and caring, and she had tremendous strength. The story was strong, the writing solid, and the worldbuilding top-notch. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
