These Z-Fillets are perfect for our hiking trips. Although the treats can get a bit of wear-and-tear on them while in a pocket for very long, they're still not messy or sticky. The fillets are about 1/4" thick and come in random-sized large pieces which are sturdy yet easily torn (sort of thick cardboard texture...but good smelling and apparently tasty). I just tear off whatever size pieces that I need for rewarding my guys for good behavior. The pieces hold together well without being either stiff or crumbly. My big shepherd will eat most any "cookie;" but my 12 year old terrier is a bit more finicky about her choices and doesn't hesitate to refuse one that isn't up to her standards. The venison and beef Z-Fillets are her new favorites. If we're hiking on our property or other non-populated terrain, I usually have my dogs off-leash. I never worry about my shepherd...he always comes when called...but my little one gets caught up with exploring and pretends that she doesn't hear me. Well, not anymore. She's currently so enamored with these treats that she stays right beside me the whole time with her eyes on "the pocket." It took 12 years and a scrumptious cookie...but she's finally an obedient dog.
I like the fact that these are safe, healthy, grain-free treats with 80% meat protein. The three different types are made of pure USA beef and chicken and the venison is from New Zealand. The only issue I really have with the Z-Fillets is the small amount of treats contained in the bag. With one of my dogs being very large, the small bag is gone in no time. One of our local stores occasionally has the larger size bags available for a good price; otherwise, I buy these small bags from Amazon and tear the fillets into smaller pieces.
For those dog owners (like me) who want to know everything that's in what we give our pets, the following is the ingredient listing from the bag of Grilled Venison: Venison, potatoes, maple syrup, garlic powder, salt, phosphoric acid, rosemary, turmeric, sage, sorbic acid (a preservative), citric acid, mixed tocopherols.
Hopefully it was just a bad batch but its the end of Zukes for me.
enjoy eating. I will purchase again in the near futureI
