The book Zulu deals with one of the strongest of the African tribes. (Several movies have been made about the Zulu with one one of the best being Zulu, which was Michael Caine's first starring role.)
This book includes many historical figures as well as fictional characters. The main protagonists are two brothers, one of whom becomes the Zulu king's champion and a great warrior; the other of whom becomes a top strategist and adviser to the kind.
The book spans a number of years when the British and Boers were encroaching on Zulu lands and wanted to use the Zulu to work as laborers in various mines. The Zulu's naturally objected.
When the British invaded there were a number of famous battles, including Isandwlana where the British were totally defeated: the first time a native army had defeated a modern European army. It also discusses the battle or Rorke's drift, where all of the British survivors received England's highest military decorations.
This is a long book with many characters. Without spoiling the outcome, it is based on the real history of the Zulu tribe and contains many interesting details of daily life.
