About Zumba Fitness
The Zumba Fitness Total Body Transformation System includes four DVDs and two toning sticks.
As a fitness instructor in his native Cali, Colombia, the life of Zumba program's founder, Alberto "Beto" Perez, took an unexpected turn one fateful day in the mid-'90s. He darted off to teach an aerobics class and forgot his traditional aerobics music, so he improvised using his own mix of music from tapes he had in his backpack (the salsa and merengue music he grew up with). Spontaneously, he created a new kind of dance-fitness, one that focused on letting the music move you (instead of counting reps over the music). Energy electrified the room; people couldn't stop smiling. His class loved it! And on that day, a revolutionary new fitness concept was born--the Zumba Fitness-Party.
In 2001, Beto brought his new dance-fitness style to Miami, Florida, and, through a student (Alberto Perlman's mom), met entrepreneurs Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion. All three hailed from Colombia and all three had a vision to bring this dynamic dance-fitness class to the masses. The three Albertos formed an alliance and created a business, calling it Zumba Fitness. They trademarked the word Zumba® and set a goal to expand the brand all over the world. First came the DVDs, then the infomercial--which introduced the Zumba Fitness-Party to the public on a wide-scale basis. That followed with the demand for Zumba classes and Zumba instructors and then the company took off and the Zumba program expanded in a big way. By 2005, Zumba Fitness spawned a full-fledged Zumba Academy to license Zumba Instructors to teach Zumba classes. More expansion followed with the launch of Zumbawear apparel and accessories, music CDs, and in 2008, one of the bestselling at-home fitness DVD series ever--the Zumba Fitness® Total Body Transformation System--which starred Beto and introduced Zumba Fitness' newest stars, Tanya Beardsley and Gina Grant. In 2010, Zumba shook the ground by being the first branded fitness program to launch a video game on all three major gaming platforms: Wii, Xbox, and PS3.
Fast forward to today, the Zumba program is now taught in gyms and studios all over the world to millions of Zumba enthusiasts. And as the program continues to evolve from its humble beginnings, to a global movement, to a way of life--its growth has only deepened the company's commitment to providing accessible fitness, without the strain, without the sacrifice, just the pure joy of a party.

My husband bought me this for Christmas to try to help me break through a weight loss plateau he knew I'd been struggling with. I was both excited and intimidated by it. After putting in the first DVD I was hooked on Zumba from the first workout! The moves are fun and easy to learn. It might take an extra beat or two to get some of the moves down. I just kept going and watching their feet until I got it.
I use a Fitbit charge HR and it's showing that I'm at my peak heart rate for almost half of the workout! That's awesome!
The toning sticks are easy to use. They got a little slick when I was using them and I was afraid one would go flying if I didn't hold them tight.
My favorite workout was the Live! Session which is what it sounds like- shot at a live event with real people in the audience sweating it out. The Abs workout which is on the same DVD kicked my butt the next day. Good stuff!
I also have the Incredible Slimdown Plus Zumba dvd set which is worth checking out. It's filming is more current than this set. Some of the instructors look like teens which can be a little disconcerting at first but it turned out to be a lot of fun. Everyone on camera in the Zumba DVDs is very buff and perfect looking. In the Shazzy Fitness DVDs they definitely tried for more diversity in that there are skinny people, heavier people, old people and young people in them. It doesn't really bother me but I figured it was worth mentioning.
I'm definitely making this the core of my cardio now. Bye, bye treadmill! Looking forward to getting into some smaller exercise clothes for the Zumba cruise next year!
At first, when I saw how light the sticks were, I thought "what a joke". It feels like they're only about 1 pound each. But while I'm not overweight and do a fair bit of working out, I tend not to do strength training, so incorporated with the dance moves, they actually did give me a bit of an arm burn and get my heart rate up a bit more. As I progress with the videos, I'll prob change the sticks to my own little dumbells to add more weight.
I had been wanting to try Zumba for a couple years now, and I was finally burnt out on my regular workout routines (ie: NOT finding one that I would actually do regularly no matter how resolved I became) that I decided to jump in and try it at home. As I've only done one video so far I can't speak for the rest of it, but I'll update my review as I get some experience with the other ones.

I have only been to two Zumba classes and I'm hooked - It is so much fun and is nothing like going to a boring old gym or aerobics class. Having the DVD's at home, means you can learn the steps at your own pace, by playing them back as often as you need to, this helps when you attend your class as others may be more advanced then you and at least you have some idea of what you should be doing.
There are 5 DVD's to choose from depending on how much time you have, or what area of your body you want to target. The DVD's all worked perfectly and were of great quality (some reviews talked about bad quality and I wonder if they bought pirate copies off Eb*y or something). At £27.96, they are a bargain as it's almost twice that price from the Zumba website and I have also seen just the toning sticks without DVD's on Eb*y for £10. The toning sticks are lovely to hold, really comfortable grips on them, and at first, I thought they are so light they won't make any difference, but after you have used them for a while, you can feel that they do actually work your muscles.
The only problem I have had doing Zumba is in my knees and I think this is down to my heavy grip trainers. I was finding it hard to do the quick turns, as they were gripping the floor too tightly, and as a result my knees have been a bit achy. I have been reading reviews on here and have just ordered a pair of Bloch 512 fusion dance sneakers which I'm hoping will help as they have a much smoother sole with a swivel spot on them. My trainers were also causing cramp in my feet, but these sneakers have a split sole which allows you to bend your foot much more easily. Will update after they arrive and I try them out at my class.
So after all my ramblings - Yes I recommend the DVD's and toning sticks, because heading into a cold dark British winter, what more could you ask for then some fantastic south american carnival music to make you want to get up and dance and get your heart moving on a grey day. For the first time in my life I now understand what athetes say about the high and release of endorphins that you get after exercising - you really do feel much more energised afer a Zumba workout. It really does lift your mood and as everyone else has said it's "FUN".
Regarding the Bloch S524 Criss Cross Dance Sneakers:-
I tried them out today at my Zumba class and they were brilliant!! I was able to twist and turn much quicker as the swivel spot on the ball of your foot is designed to allow this movement. Also I had no more cramps in my feet and so far my knees are fine, no aches or pains.
I would highly recommend these shoes for Zumba or any dance class. Well worth the money.
Delivery was very prompt too, although there was a lot of un-neccessary packaging. As they are unbreakable I don't know why they need to send them in a big cardboard box, just a padded envelope would suffice.
I was so wrong Zumba is one of the best Fitness DVD'S out there, i ended up toning up and losing weight all those years ago and it made me realise the Zumba team really have something special here. When i exercise using Zumba there is not one time i do not sweat and feel the burn the next day and i wake up sometimes extra early and do Zumba before going to work and feel so refreshed after taking a shower ready for work.
It has gotten to the point that many of my family now use Zumba because they were seeing the results from me and i have had to give the original packs that i ordered in 2010 to them and when i asked my mum to return the pack i gave to her to borrow, she loves it so much she has flat out refused to return it.
So i had decided to order another of this particular pack of the Body Transformation again because it really helped me in the past to lose weight and eat healthy, so now i use Zumba for cardio, and then combine it with other forms of toning exercise at the gym.
I would also like to add the original DVD's that i purchased in 2010, have stood the test of time and they still work very well, even though they are years old.
I have also purchased other DVD's in the Zumba range that were released years later one in particular the Zumba Slimdown party and i still sweat more than ever and feel the burn the next day. During the workout I drink so much water that i notice when i finish working out i feel full after taking my breakfast so it gets me through the day till lunch.
Zumba is very convenient if you do not always have time to go to the gym, and a person such as myself who works full- time it can sometimes be very difficult to want to go to the gym after feeling so tired from a hard days work, so I try to do Zumba during the week and then weekends do weight training.
Thank you Zumba for helping me all those years ago and even until now and you guys have really stood the test of time.
There’s really nothing more I can say other than I just am so happy to have these back in my life!
My favourites out of all the package are the abs one which is 20 minutes long and really does work the abs but in a much more fun way than just sitting there and doing crunches! I usually do that one with the 20 minute express one which again is really easy to follow and not so long, that you faint at the end of it.... The other one for me personally is the toning sticks one. It feels just the right length for a great work out and is fun using the sticks.
If you can't get out for one reason or another (I've just had a baby) then I would strongly urge you to buy this package and just keep trying different ones. If you just do the 20 minutes ones, once, three times a week, you will see a difference. Then work up to the longer ones.
You'll love it!
