Entertainment and sharing to go. That's the Zune 30 GB Digital Media Player. The Zune plays music and videos, displays images, and unlike the iPod, it even receives FM radio so you can stay on top of local news or sports. Designed around the principles of sharing, discovery, and community, Zune connects people and empowers them with the tools needed to share entertainment experiences. The Zune experience is centered around connection--connection to your library, friends, community, and other Zunes. It's powered by software that allows users to manage files on the player, rip audio CDs, and buy from a wide selection of music and videos at the Zune Marketplace.
The Zune lets you share music and pictures with other Zune users in the area.
The controls are designed to be familiar and easy to use so you can jump right in and start having fun. View larger.
Zune software can find compatible music files on your PC and copy them to your Zune device.
Wireless Zune-to-Zune sharing lets you share your favorite tracks and photos.
Browse more than 100,000 artist bios and hundreds of playlists in the Zune Marketplace. The Zune is a 30 GB digital media player, but there's a twist. You can wirelessly share selected full-length sample tracks, playlists, pictures, or your own home-grown tunes directly from Zune to Zune (within 30 feet). You can listen to the full-length songs that you receive up to three times in three days, flag the ones you love, and easily buy them the next time you sync up--its like test-driving songs before you purchase an album.
The Zune's navigation is simple and intuitive with a scroll wheel and basic buttons, and the big, bright screen makes it easy to browse music and show off your favorite pictures and videos. This attractive, smart device stores up to 7,500 songs, 25,000 pictures, or 100 hours of video. Get creative. Make playlists on the go and watch slide shows while you're listening. And if you're watching video on the Zune, you'll be pleased with the landscape mode that allows you to get the most out of the vivid display.
Zune-to-Zune Sharing
Don't forget the primary principle of the Zune: sharing. With this device in hand you're holding an opportunity to share music and photos wirelessly from one Zune to another. Send your favorite tracks or images to your friends, or just about anyone with a Zune that's within your reach.
Whether you're walking down the street, in a room with a bunch of friends, at a concert, at the airport, or on the bus, you can whip out your Zune and see all the other Zune devices that surround you. In the blink of an eye you're connected to your best friend and you can send over your band's newest song. Another friend might get the hilarious podcast your little brother made at school, plus that hot new song you just downloaded from the Zune Marketplace. And, of course, there's all the good stuff that your friends want to send back your way. The connections are made and the Zune community grows.
Best of all, the song you sent (or received) isn't a short 30-second preview--it's the whole song. Your friend can sample the song up to three times in three days, flag it on their device and then buy it from the Zune Marketplace. You can send pictures, too. If you loved the photo of your dog at the park and you just have to share it with your buddies, shoot it off to whoever is around. And any pictures that are sent or received can be kept and viewed indefinitely.
Sometimes you don't want to be noticed, and the Zune allows you to fly under the radar. All you need to do is turn the wireless function off, or adjust the privacy settings to control whether people can see you are online. And if you want to keep your Zune private while studying in the library or reading the newspaper on the bus, you can also block Zune devices in wireless range from sending you a song.
Zune Marketplace
Zune makes it easy to find music you love--whether it's songs in your existing library or new music from the Zune Marketplace. You can easily import your existing music, pictures, and videos in many popular formats from your PC and browse millions of songs at the Zune Marketplace where you can purchase individual tracks or buy a Zune Pass subscription to download as many songs as you want for a flat fee. Plus, you can apply Microsoft Points towards the purchase of music so you can buy online without a credit card for added security. At the Zune Marketplace you can read over 100,000 artist biographies and features from leading magazines including XLR8R, NME, and FADED, and you'll have easy access to Billboard Charts, including Billboard 200, Hot 100 Songs, and more. You'll even be able to browse what people in the Zune community are listening to by checking out the Zune Charts.

After a few days, I saw that the Zune was being sold for $200 at Amazon. I tried to get WM to price match but they wouldn't so I returned it. $50 is $50 right? I was just about ready to order a new one when I hesitated and decided to go for the iPod. The thing that swayed me was the availability of all the iPod accessories - from cases, to docks, to car integration, etc. I worried that I would miss out on those things with the Zune.
The pod is very sleek, no question about it. I loaded up iTunes and began to sync my songs. That's when the fun began. I spent several hours convincing iTunes to get the proper album art for my albums. In many cases, I had to find the album at Amazon and paste the art into iTunes. I guess if the album is not in the iTunes store, iTunes won't find the artwork for it. The Zune software seems to try much harder to find the album and artwork. There's lots of little things I found I didn't like about iTunes. When you click in the search box to find a song or artist, the current selection isn't selected. So, you have to either backspace over the name or select it with a drag - except that it takes about 3 tries to get it to "sense" the drag and highlight the text. It's probably an Apple mannerism but it really bugged me. iTunes seems like a huge resource hog as well. When I was listening to songs through it and doing something else, like surfing in a browser, each time it got to a new song to play, my whole machine would just stop. I couldn't even scroll a page while iTunes was loading up a new song. Scrolling through albums was very choppy as well. My machine isn't a screamer but it's not a dog either.
Next, I tried to load some video onto the pod. Now, for the Zune, I grabbed a PhotoStory .wmv show that I slapped together and loaded it up. It looked OK but when I re-rendered at 320x240, it looked great. iTunes of course, won't even look at a WMV so I used Sony Vegas to render a .mov file. QuickTime played it fine but iTunes kinda choked on it - playing it very choppy. I didn't even bother to sync it to the iPod. I know there are conversion programs out there that will do it and maybe I'm just getting lazy but I just don't want to have to deal with it.
Finally, and this is probably modern design blasphemy, but I really don't like the iPod click wheel. I find it difficult to navigate to an item without going back and forth past it two or three times. Same thing with adjusting the volume with it. I just don't like the way it works. I like buttons that move one increment at a time or scroll by being held down.
So, I'm returning the iPod and getting a Zune. I just like it better. I like being able to customize the background. I like having the radio too. When I go to the gym I mostly listen to my songs but sometimes there is something on TV and my gym has the sound broadcast on FM frequencies. The Zune works great for getting the TV sound and not having to suffer through the Closed Captioning that is 15 seconds behind the picture.
The accessories part doesn't really bother me either. I really don't plan on buying many anyway so I don't think I'll really miss it.
So I'm off to buy the black Zune. Or maybe the white one... Oh crap!
Not all Zunes have an initial "issue" with the battery not charging and the screen freezing, if yours does....it is a very MINOR issue and is easily corrected as I mention below.
First, I bought the Brown 30GB for my husband as a Christmas present this year (2007) instead of an iPod for several reasons, but mainly because: it has an FM radio; was on sale (the brown was much lower priced than the other colors the day I bought it off Amazon...it's a cool chocolate brown with a green tint to the case); and because I did not want to fall into the whole iPod craze (I'm not a big fan of Apple® and have been a Microsoft® customer for over 20 years)....we are both VERY glad I went with the Zune.
Secondly, to save you the frustration of having to search the Internet for a solution to the minor, yet irritating issue with the battery, like I had...THE main thing I must recommend for a relatively smooth install...BE PATIENT...Do NOT connect your NEW Zune to your computer until after you install the Zune software FIRST (which is what Microsoft recommends). I would also suggest downloading the newest version off the Zune software/firmware site from Microsoft (version 2.3 or higher) because with the 2.3 update, Microsoft apparently corrected an issue with the battery not wanting to charge correctly and the screen freezing, which is what ours was doing when I first tried to charge it (software update: [...] ). After I UNINSTALLED the old version and installed the update...the Zune worked perfectly and has continued to do so. Note: For some odd reason, installing the CD version and clicking the "Check for Updates" did not install the 2.3 version, so, do a complete download off the URL above.
I would also recommend that you RESIST pressing the power button when you first take it out of the box because it would have very little power and could get stuck on a screen with an exclamation point inside an illustration of a battery (which is easily fixed if it does happen because this is what happened with ours) and instead, begin charging your Zune....either from a USB 2.0 port on the BACK of your PC or with the AC adapter that comes with the travel pack. If you use the USB port, be sure to install the software first. Also, Do NOT try charging it with an external USB Hub even if the hub has its own power, which is what I initially did try; this method didn't work well enough to charge the Zune effectively. You should let your Zune fully charge for 3 hours prior to using it.
Because I did not download the software/firmware update first, (I used the supplied CD) I actually needed to let the Zune battery completely drain two or three times because the screen would get stuck, first showing an illustration of a battery with an exclamation point, then when the illustration showed a battery with a plug....I simply unplugged the Zune and left it sitting on my desk with whatever illustration was on the screen until the screen went blank (a few hours). This happened when I used the CD software that was supplied with the Zune (the CD part number 1006 X12-6319303). After I installed version 2.3 off the Zune/Microsoft site (version 2.3 - 1145), there were no more issues with the battery not charging.
If you experience any other "issues"....this site might be helpful: [...]
The FM Radio works great!...and the overall sound of the music is simply wonderful. You can adjust the sound in the Settings using the equalizer feature.
I have been using the Zune Marketplace (via the Zune software) to purchase and download songs, which has worked extremely well. I initially bought 4000 points ($[...]) which applies toward the purchase of individual songs or complete albums. Basically, the songs are 79 cents a piece...very reasonable. The Zune also comes with a mix of some pics and songs pre-installed.
In a nutshell, it is my honest opinion that the Zune is a much better value than an iPod and I would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to purchase a digital media player.
