Removed from their slots in this set's rubber-footed wood storage block, these eight knives slice any steak, chop, or roast into bite-size pieces. Gourmet is one of Henckels's inexpensive cutlery lines. These knives don't have bolsters, but that feature isn't vital when confronting a rib eye. The high-carbon, stainless-steel 4-1/2-inch blades are stamped, not forged, and because they are serrated on the upper halves, they tend to tear meat fibers rather than slice precisely through them the way straight-edge knives do. On the other hand, the fine serrations reduce the tearing effect, and the blades' lower halves are straight. The synthetic, three-rivet, full-tang handles are classically styled. --Fred Brack

One of the product pictures showed a close-up of the blade displaying it was "Made in Germany". The box it came with also stated "Made in Germany". ALL THESE ARE FALSE ADVERTISING !!! Each of the steak knifes were stamped "Made in Spain" :(

I got this set few years ago so finally I feel like it's a good time to comment on their performance/quality. So here are my short impressions:

- The blade material is pretty good - no rust spots of any kind (even after going through different washing methods by different people), the tips of the blades are in perfect shape and the edge is still usable (meaning it still cuts the food well) even without a single sharpening throughout those years.
- The handle's plastic material is also pretty good - no cracks of any kind (even around rivet holes), no discolorations.
- Now the rivets. The rivets are, unfortunately, the weakest link of these knives: they were made (at the time of my order) out of less durable kind of metal which didn't held up well and finally started to fracture, losing small bits of the rivet over a course of last year (luckily none of these got into food). This is without any physical abuse (no drops and no knocks against the handle) of any kind.

Now I don't really expect the knives (any kind of knives) to last forever BUT considering my experience with the other knives (many of which had a cheaper price) by other brands with similarly exposed rivets I'd say the metal quality/performance for the rivets on this Henckels set is pretty mediocre, especially considering the retail price. And yes, I know that there's a "lifetime warranty" and I could eventually receive a free replacement (after a month or more) but I have my doubts that the replacement will have rivets made out of more durable metal, so I'll probably be gradually (after all rivets will finally fail) replacing these with a product from different manufacturer.

Buyers should be aware that the description of the knives on this site; as clearly depicted; does not necessarily mean that the knives that arrive may be made in(as in my experience Spain, Thailand or China. Even though the packaging indicates German made and instructions shows German made, the knives that arrived were Spanish made. The return policy may be alright for locals purchasers but adding half the cost of the product to return it from Australia is not cost effective. My concerns re the issue have not been responded to.

Perfect. These match the other knives I've had for at least ten years and they still look and perform like new after countless dishwasher cycles. I expect these ne ones will perform similarly as they're identical to the old ones. Great knives!

I bought these knives for my wife for Christmas. We bought them to complement our regular set of Professional S knives.

About the knives: The look of these was dead on with our current set. The finish of the handles could have been better. They feel a bit light and the handles just aren't as smooth as the Professional S set. That being said -they weren't nearly as expensive. I posted pictures of the end serrations on the blade. Not sure how this will effect sharpening them in the future.

About the block:
It was lighter in color than the other knife block we have. The stock photo is a very good representation of the color of the product we received. I would have been more pleased if it matched exactly.

Overall:
My wife is very happy with them. They cut well and look pretty good. I only ask for a bit better quality feel and a slightly different block color.

I had recieved a set of JA Henkel knives for my wedding 8 years ago. Through the following years we moved around a lot and somehow my set of 5 knives became 2 knives. I had been looking for more to suppliment my scanty collection.
I tried JA Hanckels international steak knives, but they did not compare to the quality of my old knives.
Finally I came across this set. It is perfect. It matches my old set. =)
Why I LOVE these knives:
*They are sharp (be careful)
*They have a serraded edge and a flat edge on the same knife. This might seem wierd to someone who has never used one, but it works perfectly. The serraded part slices the skin of the tomato and the flat part cuts the meat of the tomato like butter.
*It has a very thin tip and edge

The block is nice, too, but I really bought this for the knives.

I had a set of steak knives that didn't cut very well. I was so sick of them I decided to spend what I thought was a considerable sum to get "good" knives. Unfortunately, I did not see the editor's comments on this site before buying--they do tear meat, rather than cut it. Frankly, they are only marginally better than those they replaced. [The block is also fairly useless. Who wants their steak knives sitting on the counter top all by themselves? I have my kitchen knives in a block and do not need or want two blocks sitting out.]

Content with them for the price. On the Box is said Very Clearly Knife Block made in China. Knives made in Germany.
On the knives themselves are the twins and clearly say on each knife "made in Spain". These are stamped. The synthetic handle
looks like wood. The blades are not quite as ridged as my last ones; but are of a better quality. I believe these knives have a life time guarantee… There was no literature in the package. For the feel, quality and price I feel content. As always. Time will tell.
