I did have to contact Comcast customer service to register the modem. The process was only about 5-10 minutes with them mainly questions why I was switching my modem and where did I buy the new one etc while they entered the P/N and Mac #'s to add to my account and reset it from their end. After that, my internet access was business as usual.
Unless you are paying for faster speeds, don't be surprised if the speed jump isn't too big. I went from 35+ Mbps (download speeds) to 60Mbps. My upload speeds seem to remain almost the same after running the speed tests; perhaps 1.5Mbps faster.
It's not the drastic "triple the speed" boost like I've seen others have gotten by upgrading their modem. But I was satisfied with my old speed levels last week and now it's nearly doubled that.
If you don't need to upgrade your modem right way, it's best to wait until the price is back down. I noticed this modem's pricing has gone up by 33% from what I paid for it only few days ago so others must be upgrading en masse because Comcast is notifying them to do it like I am driving the prices up.
I have the LAN port connected to my custom Linux firewall, and it syncs up with DHCP and forwards traffic at 35.5/4.1 (down/up) no problem. I trust the specs, which say that it can handle much higher bandwidths.
I think that a dedicated, simple modem like this, with a separate dedicated WAP, usually is more reliable and extensible than a more expensive all-in-one unit. With this unit, you could upgrade your WAP to 802.11ac in a year or two, without effecting your Internet connectivity and without wasting your investment in bundled (and generally inferior) modem WAP.
