I love that it turns my Verizon mobile broadband card into a MIFI/personal hotspot. This has helped me countless times while stuck at airports allowing me to take full advantage of my WIFI-only Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet computer. For example, I was at Chicago's O'Hare airport last month and my flight was delayed. The MWR211 allowed me to fire up my Samsung Galaxy Tab and download a few movies in time for my flight. I was able to enjoy both movies during my 3.5 hour flight.
In Mexico City, I was able to catch the MWR211's WIFI signal via my ROKU streamer that was hooked to the hotel room's TV and was able to watch Netflix seamlessly.
In Lake Havasu, the house that we stayed at had no internet nor any satellite- or cable TV and again, the MWR211 coupled with my Verizon mobile broadband card saved the day. We were able to download movies on Amazon VOD and watch HULU Plus. Furthermore, the kids were able to download apps on their various tablets and mobile media players.
Another plus is that if you are in a hotel room with a free (ethernet) internet connection, the MWR211 will also create a WIFI hotspot from that wired connection so that you can use multiple wireless devices within your hotel room.
Setup is very straight-forward (it's as easy as setting up a home WIFI router) and the manufacturer provides a list of mobile broadband devices that are compatible with the MWR211. I like that it automatically logs-in my Verizon broadband card for me without having to start up the Verizon software and having to manually connect. Also, I did not have to install any software on my laptop.
Battery life is rated at 2 hours which is fine for me since I'm usually plugged in somewhere and I don't surf all that long while waiting for a flight.
Overall, the MWR211 very easily provides a MIFI experience while on the go. I highly recommend this product.
There appears to be a great deal of advanced functionality that I won't use, but nice to know it's there in case I need it. I primarily need this to share my 4GLTE bandwidth at work and with my family's wireless gadgets when we travel. Since my wife and I both telecommute from home on occasion, I will test the router's ability for failover, in case my cable service's internet goes down.
I would have given this product five stars except for these two reasons - The on/off switch seems very flimsy - while it works today, I hope it holds up to my daily use. The other reason is that this model is no longer being manufactured by Zyxel, nor do they have a replacement offering that meets the same spec.
If you have UML290 that you need to share this product should be at the top of your short list for consideration.
Update 8/1/2012: Have had the router for a few weeks and use it Monday though Friday. Great little router, connects - stays connected - battery life is impressive too. Throughput is double my old Cradlepoint PHS300 averaging 10 megabits down, between 1-2 up.
Two issues to note: The router mysteriously reset itself to the default configuaration after it sat idle over the weekend - about 5 minutes to reset, not a big deal for me. Streaming video seems to overwhelm the router (maybe the modem?) after about 5-10 minutes of playback - streaming audio is fine - will debug further if I get a chance, but streaming video is not a big requirement for me at this time.
Also reasonably priced.
I'm still researching if there are any further settings I need to adjust to get the speed up a bit. When I connect the UML290 directly to my laptop I get almost 20Mbps down and 8Mbps up. When connecting my laptop, iPhone, or iPad through the router I'm getting at most 8Mbps down and barely 1Mbps up. Not sure why such a big loss but those speeds are still very good compared to 3G speeds I can get otherwise through the apple devices.
