About 10 months in some or our wireless devices started to experience disconnections, sometimes multiple times a DAY. The only fix was to unplug it and plug it back in. Yes...it's "cheap" and doesn't even have a power button or even a soft reset button. WTH??
Well we put up with this for several moths as it got progressively worse. It's routing features, wired connections, and throughput were still doing just fine! UNTIL...
One day we needed to add another device to the allowed MAC address list. So as I had done dozens of times in the past I went to the admin IP address with the browser and... HOSED!!!
By hosed I mean the HTTP admin console was no longer accessible. I tried everything short of violence (although I did threaten it!) to get it to work: Cycling power, changing LAN ports, bare-bonesing the connections (by now my wife is "loving" all the network ups and downs I'm inflicting on the network trying to fix it. AUGH!).
In the end the ONLY option was to do a hard reset and wipe the router to the factory default settings. Which EFFECTIVELY BRICKED THE ROUTER because this did NOT cause the admin console to start working again!
Now we have a "wireless" "router" with NO way to configure the wireless network and NO way to configure it for connecting to our ISP. And even if we could use it with the default settings, keep in mind the default settings are: WiFi=ON Security=NONE! Which is analogous to leaving the front door to your house wide open with a sign in your yard saying "come steal our stuff, molest our family, and use our house as a base for doing it to others!" Thank you, no!
Just why and how did this device degrade to a point where it no longer functioned? Is this device just a total piece of garbage (beyond the first few months), or was it designed to do that, so consumers are required to periodically buy more units from cheap router fabricators in China? Does it really matter which?
By the way, yes..."Made in China".
