Product Description
Product Description
The ZyXEL MWR102 is the perfect travel companion for anyone who needs fast, easy wireless internet access on the go. Designed with a portable form factor that easily fits into a pocket, a laptop case, or the palm of your hand, it’s the perfect way to bring a wireless connection with you whether in the office or on the road. Many ultra-portable devices like PDAs, tablets, handheld game consoles, and even some laptops no longer accept a wired connection, limiting their functionality in locations without wireless access. The MWR102 combines a miniature router and wireless access point to create the perfect way to share high-speed wireless internet access in hotel rooms, conference rooms, or anywhere a wired broadband connection is available. The MWR102 doesn’t sacrifice performance in favor of its portability. 2.4GHz wireless technology allows 11n data transfer rates of up to 150Mbps while still remaining compatible with older 11b/g devices. Because power outlets are often in short supply while travelling, the MWR102 can be USB-powered to ensure convenient internet access anywhere. Setting up a secure wireless connection couldn’t be simpler. Each MWR102 ships with a different default SSID and encryption enabled by default. Just check the bottom of the MWR to find out the security key used by your router, or change it to one of your own choosing. To provide the highest data security possible, the MWR102 supports WEP, WPA, and WPA2 encryption. It also comes equipped with firewall features like NAT (Network Address Translation), VPN pass-through, and SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) to prevent attacks from the internet.

Good: Works well, does what it says. Default wireless network name and password listed on the bottom of the device, with a sticker. Default IP address and username/password also listed on the bottom of the device, for accessing the router's built-in configuration webpage.
Good: It includes a small little Ethernet cable that is just long enough to make a connection. I plugged it into a hotel's Ethernet jack, on the wall of the room. The router is lightweight enough that it could dangle without pulling too hard on the table.
Good: With the router in "Router" mode, the router created a wireless hotspot for me to connect all my devices to. The router correctly worked as a firewall, to protect my devices from the nasty hotel network. Best of all, no matter how many devices I have, the router only appears as one device to the hotel, so that I don't get billed more for having multiple devices!
Good: The speed and range of this router's wireless hotspot is quite good. I was actually able to maintain a connection to my hotel room from outside in the hotel parking lot, something I was not expecting!
Good: The built-in webpage of this router is powerful enough to give you some useful configuration options, such as Static IP. It is essential to use Static IP in order to do the two-router trick (see below), giving each router its own range, otherwise the default IP address ranges of the two routers will overlap and that would be bad.
Bad: Although this is advertised as a 3-in-1 router, the hardware switch on the router only has two positions: "Router" and "AP". In order to get the most useful mode, Client Bridge, you have to set it to "AP" and then access the built-in webpage and fiddle with some undocumented settings in order to achieve it. It's not in the manual, but do a web search for "zyxel mwr102 client bridge" and you will find it.
Bad: Does not meet the latest wireless speed standard, Wireless-AC. Instead, you are stuck with the previous generation, Wireless-N. Still good enough for most uses.
Bad: Does not reach the new 5 GHz band. Instead, you are limited to the 2.4 GHz band, which is extremely crowded already. Still good enough, as 99% of the networks you want to connect to these days are still on the 2.4 GHz band.
Bad: Uses Mini-USB connector, not the Micro-USB connector that is standard for power these days (almost all Android cellphones use Micro-USB). Mini-USB is years obsolete, it is strange that Zyxel chose to use this, maybe they had some old tooling they needed to use up? At least it uses USB power, so you can plug it into any USB charger for power, you don't need a separate power adapter for this router.
The two-router trick! One router is good enough on its own to share wired Ethernet access (such as in a hotel room or conference room), but many facilities are going wireless only these days. To be able to share that wireless connection across multiple devices, while still only being billed for a single device, you need two routers. This trick also works to extend a weak wireless network out some more distance.
Here's how to do it. Set the first router to "Router" mode. Set the second router to "Client Bridge" mode (this is "AP" mode, but after you do that, go into the webpage and set "Client Bridge" from there). Use one Ethernet cable to connect the WAN (blue) port of the first router, to the LAN (black) port of the second router. This is important. The first router provides your wireless hotspot, for all of your devices. The first router merges all of those into one connection, going up the Ethernet cable, to the second router. Use the built-in webpage of the second router to scan for nearby wireless networks, and choose the hotel (or whatever) that you want to connect to. Once the connection is made, the second router will take the connection from the Ethernet cable and bridge it wirelessly, to the wireless network you have chosen. You have now shared all of your devices with this wireless network, while still appearing to the hotel's billing system to only be a single device! The monetary savings on a single business trip could pay you back the cost of both routers!
To actually make this work, you will have to fiddle with Static IP settings, so that the IP address of the built-in webpages of both routers, and the DHCP address ranges of both routers, don't overlap with one another. Do a web search for "bridge wireless connection using two routers" or similar phrasing, and there should be plenty of tutorials for you to follow if you are unfamiliar with IP addressing.

Instructions to setup for repeater is vague so I got them from the manufacture.
MWR102 Client Mode Configuration.docx
MWR102 Client Mode Configuration
1. Configuring your computer
Your computer needs to be set with a Static IP address. This means you need to manually set an IP address on your computer.
A) To do this in Windows XP; Click on Start>Control Panel (set for Classic View)>Network Connections, then right click Local Area Connection and click Properties. In properties, scroll down the list and highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click Properties. Then select Use the Following IP Address. For the IP Address type in 192.168.100.10. Click on the Subnet Mask box and it will fill in automatically with 255.255.255.0. That is all we need to set in this page, click OK at the bottom and then click Close on the Properties window.
B) To do this in Windows Vista and Windows 7; Click on Start>Control Panel>Network and Internet>Network and Sharing Center. Then on the left side of Network and Sharing Center click on Manage Network Connections (in Vista) or Change Adapter Settings (in Windows 7). Then right click on Local Area Connection and click Properties. In this window highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 and click Properties. Then select Use the Following IP Address. For the IP Address type in 192.168.100.10. Click on the Subnet Mask box and it will fill in automatically with 255.255.255.0. That is all we need to set in this page, click OK at the bottom and then click Close on the Properties window.
C) To do this on the Mac; Click on the Apple Icon in the top right corner. Select System Preferences. Click on Network, then click on Ethernet. Click on the drop down box next to Configure IPv4 and set it to Manually. For the IP Address type in 192.168.100.10. Click on the Subnet Mask box and enter 255.255.255.0. Then click Apply.
Once your computer is set with a Static IP address, you should be able to open a browser and access the MWR102’s interface by typing 192.168.100.1 in the address bar.
D) After setting up the MWR102 you will want to set your computer back to the way it was. Go through the steps again and for Windows, change the setting to Obtain an IP Address Automatically and Obtain a DNS Server Address Automatically. On the Mac, change the Configure IPv4 setting to Using DHCP.
2. Setting up the MWR102
First, flip the switch on the side of the MWR102 from Router mode to AP mode.
A) Next, open a browser window and type in 192.168.100.1 and press Enter.
B) You will get the login page for the MWR102. The User Name will be admin and the password will be 1234. Next click Log In.
C) On the left side of the screen we want to click on Wireless>Basic Settings.
D) In this section we will need to change the Wireless Mode from AP to Client, then click Apply at the bottom of the page.
E) You will receive a message warning about using WPA/WPA2 mixed mode. This means that the wireless router you are connecting with must be in strictly WPA, or WPA2 mode, not both.
F) Next you will want to click on Wireless>Site Survey.
G) In here you can click on the Site Survey button to bring up a list of the close by wireless networks. Select the bubble to the right of your network and click Next at the bottom of the page.
H) On the next screen you will need to input the security settings of your wireless router.
I) Once you have input the values for your network security, click Connect. If successfully connected you will get a message saying you were able to connect.
3. Completing Setup
At this point you can close your browser window and follow the instructions in section 1>D to set your computer back to get an IP address automatically (DHCP). Once this is done you can connect devices into the LAN and WAN ports of the MWR102 and they will get connected to your main wireless router through the wireless bridge we have created.

It's so small, even I forget I had it with me.
It comes with an ethernet cable, USB cable (to power the unit), and a wall plug.
Setup is pretty straightforward.
Don't forget to secure the login settings page.
By the way, the pouch is a nice addition.
Hope my feedback helps someone out there on the lookout for a wireless travel router, and at a reasonable price.
