I wanted only basic functionality, maybe if you want more options and abilities then check the online manual for its ability to perform certain tasks but so far I have found the following:
Good:
* Easy setup...I felt it was straightforward generally, worked from the start, I did spend a long time working out HOW to use it but it was trial and error....and to reiterate it worked immediately no probs!
* Cheap for its features (£60 for the Zyxel and £54 for a WD Red 1Tb)...really good price for the overall package
* Quiet. Maybe others got dodgy fans but i find it very quiet
* It works! If you want a NAS to be the info centre for your photos (very much in my case) and other media then its superb
* The copy/sync button is a savour....i just moved all my files into one folder on the device very quickly...however read below for the movement of files thereafter
Ok:
* Confusion. For a start its unclear how best to move your mass of 'original' files. I started by moving then in explorer as i didn't want to change my file system and guessed the zyxel would do so. This was going to take more hours than I expect to live (moving large numbers in explorer is zyxel admit a slow process), so is use the copy/sync which cut it down to 2hrs approx (for say 300gb of data..which is not fast still but hey). I then moved batch by batch each file type into the zyxel system using the web browser - this probably took 40mins - but should be worth it as i build up data going forward, but this browser file system is clunky and poor! The issue i have and thus the confusion is that there are three ways of moving data (copy/sync) for mass ports...explorer (fine for day to day use thereafter) and also the ZPilot which is basically a drop icon which auto sorts your files into the NAS (not sure I want to use this somehow). Anyway my point is that the mass move of data is the biggest issue to get over, but once you do it all seems fine. I just wish the reasons or function of each was explained better. Maybe some pointers of how to move mass data blocks would help.
* I am unlikely to use the media hubs for data...its not the best ive seen and most people will have some other way for streaming the data in question...also I found that music and video are very quick to open but photos less so, although i now see that once opened they open more quickly once accessed again a second time so maybe something to do with FTP?
Bad:
* Some functionality needs YOUR time unput. For example to wake-on-lan (remote access of the NAS using a broadband connection) needs some research and ability to possibly change router and ip settings....dont expect it to work out of the box. Again the best advice is to download the manual and read the sections that may apply...to avoid disapoinment.
Overall though very impressed particularly with the price vs functionality debate!

For the price and functionality, perfect for the NAS novice

I have a lot of home videos of family and holidays and I got fed up with hunting in the cupboard for the DVD when wanting to play one. I looked at putting them online (using Picasa, Vimeo etc.), but you soon hit storage or file size limits unless you upgrade to 'pro' versions, which always involves a financial outlay. Looking for a solution, I kept coming across the phrase 'DLNA certified' device. In a nutshell if your TV has this (and most modern TVs do) it can connect (via your broadband router) to your PC/laptop and allows your TV to play videos/music/photos on your PC. I didn't want to fire up my laptop each time I wanted to watch a video, so a NAS device was my solution.
I've never owned one before, so I had to do some research (thank you Billy Google!). The price range the these devices is wide (my budget isn't!). I settled on this Zyxel, because it just the case and you can put your own hard drive in to suit your requirements. I went for a WD 1TB 'red' drive as it's suited for NAS devices. It also has USB and SATA sockets so you can add extra storage and it's DLNA certified.
It arrived within 2 days and took 30 seconds to insert the hard drive. Following the quick start guide, I had it up and running with no problems and started copying videos from my laptop to it. My TV could also see the NAS and played HD videos from it with no buffering. Other devices (e.g. smart phone and tablet) could also detect the NAS with no problems.
In conclusion, this is the perfect device if you're new to NAS devices, with limited budget and are technically competent without being a 'geek'.

Great piece of kit

I purchased a Seagate Homeshare awhile back and could never get it to work. It would never show all directories or contents, Seagate support was absolutely useless so I gave up and purchased this great little thing and i never looked back.
It was easily set up and to instal the drive, it did what it was designed for i.e. show all directories and there contents over wireless giving good results.
The only minor point was it tended to be a little noisier that the Seagate, but it worked first time and I am very pleased with it.
The Homeshare is now heading for its rightful place, the dustbin.

I bought this to add to my home storage capacity on my home network, added a 3TB Hard Drive, Easy to configure for most of the advertised purposes but found that the iTunes Server dose connect but can not see any attributes or play files. that aside this was a great buy and am very happy with access speeds and easy of use. would like the ability to hide some of the shares though.

ZyXEL NSA310 1-Bay Network Storage NAS Closure

I had no gripes with this item per se, only that I was expecting to be able to plug in my IDE drive, but it will only accept SATA drives. As I did not want to purchase a SATA drive I returned the item for a refund, which the vendor returned with no fuss. Credit to them for this.
