Product Description

An instrument, a portable party, and a great addition to your wardrobe, all in one! The Zydeco tie is a fun way to add a new sound to your ensemble while making a fashion statement. This stainless steel tie has evolved from the wood-framed washboards used in traditional American music. It creates the sound of the musical washboard when played with the 2 included metal thimbles. A great way to have rhythm wherever you go ? from the office to a musical jam session.

First off, the description is wrong, it is the size of a normal tie not 8 inches long, and all of these zydeco ties are the same, made by the same people. You might need to bend the clip so it fits more snug on your shirt. It helps to slighty bend the tie itself to contour to your torso as you can control how much it rings by how much it is in contact with your body (muting). Leaning forward makes it ring more, but if you do that too much it starts swinging around and you can't control it. Once you find the optimum position where it rings well and you can control it then you're ready to make some actual music. I ended up putting 2 small but thick (half inch) foam pads on the inside surface (about at 4 and also at five and a half inches from the bottom) which greatly helped to keep my beer belly from absorbing the metallic part of the sound, and also made it more stable. I also kind of hold the top of it in place under my chin. I just gave my sister one of these and with her slim female build she didn't need to modify it all. It's not very wide, so at first you'll have some mis-strokes, but after a while you'll get more accurate. You'll never be able to play some of faster and more complicated maneuvers that the professional washboard players can do, but it can still played in a wide variety of ways that sound great alone or (especially) with music. I found the thimbles to be kind of large, bought some for $1 each, they fit great. How the thimbles contact the tie affects the sound, if you play the thimbles sideways more than using the fingertips the increased contact produces a brighter tone. That's about it, grasshoppers. Obviously it doesn't sound as good as a $150 washboard, but it does sound pretty good, definitely recognizable as a washboard (see youtube videos). Oh yeah, and it's more fun than several hundred barrels of monkeys. Never played a washboard before, within a day of getting it I was jamming most excellently with Clifton and Boozoo. Laissez les neckties roulez!!!

This is a very cool musical instrument that anyone can play if you have rhythm . Use the thimbles or use spoons to keep the beat. I've probably bought 5 of these and end up either selling it to someone who falls in love with it or I give it to a friend or family member.

For the price, this is a great novelty item. It fits onto a shirt collar with a metal clip in the back. For an attention getting rhythm section, it is the perfect item. Striking to look at and play!

As trop-rock, zydeco and island music lovers, we follow many musical groups from Western New York to Southwest Florida. I purchased several of these Zydeco Ties for ourselves and as gifts for friends to "play along with the band". WHAT A HIT! They are thin, lightweight, and easy to transport. Each tie comes with 2 thimbles for playing. The tie has a hook in the back and easily hangs from the neck of a t-shirt, blouse or tank top. Although the sound is more subtle than a full-sized "washboard", they are fun to play and a good way to learn. More fun than playing "air guitar". Be sure to order several because everyone will want to join in!

I haven't given this to my son yet. Saving it for Christmas. I think it's a great idea and he will probably get a big kick out of it. Fun way to wear something fun and be ready for making music at the drop of a hat.

I ordered this for a "white elephant" gift at a Christmas party. It was a hit! It was traded around and back & forth several times. A lot of loud laughter when it's recipient opened the box.
It's not a musical instrument, it's more like a noisemaker. Well made.
