At a cannery, a lidless can is filled with whatever. The lid, at that stage a separate piece that has a lip, is placed atop the filled can, then the lip of the lid and the top of the side of the can are rolled together and crimped to make an airtight seal. The great majority of can openers open the can by CUTTING the metal, either piercing the top of the can inside the crimp or slicing the top of the side of the can below the crimp; some of the side opening can openers also roll the edge after cutting to reduce the danger of the user cutting himself or herself on the can after opening it.Read more ›
Pic #1 shows how the opener sits on the can.
Pic #2 shows how the the little 'grabbers' on the opener will grab the edge of the lid and take it off
Pic #3 show detail of the functioning parts of the can opener - the 2 small vertical nubs at the top are the lid grabbers for removal of the lid, and the large round thing at the bottom and the round thing just above it are the two things that turn to uncrimp the lid from the can so that they can be separated. I hope this helps answer your questions!
As others have mentioned, this can opener requires an extra step to get the lid off after it is opened. I found that to be a pain.
After 2 months of use, it has stopped opening cans for no apparent reason. I am thinking the blade has worn out already. This opened is going back.
Design and build are excellent: nice weight, good grips and easy to turn. I can't imagine that there is anything to wear out for many years.

A little tricky to use. Designed differently than other safety can openers I've used. Works decently, though. I bought it for its color and am happy with it.Published 5 days ago by Amazon Customer
Years ago I got Zyliss products and they were great, so I expected a good opener. Unfortunately, this one mangled our cat food cans, and I expect the same may be true for tuna... Read morePublished 24 days ago by Peter Shkabara
Hands down the best can opener ever. Period. Detatches the lid from the can without sharp edges. Solid, ergonomic construction.Published 1 month ago by Joshua
I think these are the best can openers made. First one lasted about 10 years and this is a replacement.Published 1 month ago by Ian
Easy to use and no sharp edges on either the can or the lid. One more thing, there are not sharp edges accessible in the product itself either, so it is one less dangerous thing in... Read morePublished 1 month ago by Carolina M. Passos
