For starters I partnered it with one WD 4TB HDD. These HDDs have a very good long term reliability record and are whisper quiet. The two combined provide a very fast and super quiet service. I plan to drop a second WD drive in at a later date.
As for the software, the GUI is clear and concise, it is possible to install Google Drive as well as Squeezebox Server and Fonz Fun Plug but you will have to do a bit of reading and hunting to find the location they are hiding in as they don't appear in the default download location. Twonky comes as standard so you might not need the squeeze box and coupled with bubbleUPNP makes a great method of sending your music /video and images to either your smart TV or Chromecast or some PC all of which need to be on your network of course.
All in all a great product and for a price that you could not make your own for.
Once setup however, it delivers. I am using a 3TB disk in the unit and performance for the house is perfectly fine. It is nice and compact and the power saving features are very good. My favourite feature is the ability to power off the unit and turn it back on to a schedule. My unit has just done a firmware update after which the management/setup interface no longer works using Firefox. It does work using IE and Edge (both Microsoft Browsers). The rest of the functionality is unaffected.
Overall it is a good product once you get past the slightly clunky initial setup.
I needed a new NAS box in a hurry since one of my Buffalo LinkStations had just gone wrong.
I picked this one mainly down to the good reviews and the good price.
Good points:
- Fast
- Compact size
- Quiet
- It works!
Bad points:
- External PSU
- The case & caddies do look flimsy. However, since I don't intend to swap out HDDs very
often I don't believe this is a real problem.
Unlike another reviewer I didn't find the lack of a printed manual a problem. This NAS is
very easy to set up and use. Bear in mind that it needs SMB v1 for Windows.
