Professor Dodd conclusively shows in this book that the First Apostles were primarily preachers and that any return to apostolic principles must take this important fact into account. Moreover, the main content of their preaching was the Lordship and Ressurrection of Christ. Although accepting the findings of higher criticism, the author clearly shows the Paul and others were first concerned to proclaim the message of salvation to unregenerate persons and only then to give them ethical instruction. This kerygma must be distinguished from the didache of the Synoptic gospels, or the teaching tradition of the words of Jesus.
