I honestly dont know without opening. Since its for Xmas i want to leave in box. In looking through the box it appears to have a hard pastic cover but I think its just for shipping and packing. You do have to buy somw things separate a tote bag (if you want). I got one as I think it would help the child carry. I read all over the box. On the back here is what is listred as optional: "Get Skin", AC adapter, headphones, tote, and rechargeable battery kit". Sounds like "Skin" must be a covering for the screen. It is for 3-9 years old. In looking at it I personally dont see that it will need a screen protector being as it is made for children. That was a good question. I know this is a long answer but was trying to give you as much info as I could without opening it since it's a gift. I dont know if there is a listing for the "skin" but it may be good to have. I did not get it, nor hink about a screen covering. It sure appears to e a very neat product that does so many things. Apparently you can do an internet connction which I have no plans of doing for a 4 year old. It does come with software. It has a rotating camera. It says you can take pis and then edit. Says it has a video recorder. Oh, one thing it has some games on it. But I also purchased an extra one called "Hello Kitty". This grandma nevr heard of it but apparently lots of young ones are into that. Also on the box it says if you register the VTech you will receive 2 more free downloads. It has an e-Reader. I dont think there is anything this doesnt do. Maybe this grandma should have got this for herself. But a lot of games you purchase separately. Just noticed it says "4 AA batteries required and NOT included. So to all be sure younget those batteries. I hope this helped. see less I honestly dont know without opening. I do not feel that you do we do not have one on ours. The sides are pretty sturdy and due to the fact that the screen is not flush with the sides it is more protected then a tablet like an iPad
