Of course, even on a non-hdtv. I put it on my Mom's old 2,000 lbs. LG Flatron, 37 inches, using a composite cable that comes with the BD player, no problems whatsoever, except maybe loosing some image from the sides because of the tv's 4:3 aspect ratio.

As best I understand from our audio/video tech, the blue ray player is what enables the streaming. Should work.

Yes, you will be able to stream netflix or Amazon with the Sony BDP S590 . If your Samsung Tv is only 3 years old , must have HDMI inputs to watch in High Hefinition wich is the only video output for this player.
Very important to Stream any kind of video: at least an internet connection of 2.5 to 4 Mb of Speed.

No. You don't need a smart TV to use the apps on you player. Nor will you need a HDTV of the same brand for the apps to work. They put the "compatible devices" out there so that when you connect a crooked TV to the player and the app couldn't play they can say "it's not our problem".

Yes, it should work for you. The tv shouldn't matter, the blu ray is fantastic.
