Does it work with mcafee virus already on a pc?

You should have one and only one anti-virus/anti-malware application on your PC. You can safely uninstall McAfee and install Norton if that's the one you choose.

No, and you do want two antivirus and or security programs on your PC, because this can cause problems like; slowing your Pc down, or one program reading the other one as a Fake scan or virus.
I prefer Norton myself, it has more features like a PC clean up and Identity protection. Additionally there are helpful web browser extensions like; adblock plus, that helps block annoying and often harmful ads on websites.

I believe, like George L Fort said, it needs to be deleted and Norton will actually uninstall it during the Norton install. My experience over many years is that you do not want 2 or more antivirus/security programs running on the same pc. This will possibly lead to the slowing down of the PC with these 2 (or more) programs running together. If necessary you could use products like malwarebytes or spybot but only as something to manually scan for infestations...as a backup to your main program...not have them running in the background with your main security software.
