When you use the Recharger Pack, you remove the "non-rechargeable batteries" and insert the "rechargeable battery paks" that come with the recharge kit. There is a small mouse sized device that plugs into the electrical outlet and has a cord with an end that plugs into the LeapPad2. You cannot turn the LeapPad2 on when the charger is being charged. Once the batteries are charged, you unhook the charger from the LeapPad2 and the wall and Play..... Or you can re-insert non-recyclable batteries back into the unit. The Battery packs are two AA batteries sealed together end-to-end. I would suppose if you wanted to, you could use the pack in other LeapPads, but they would have to require the same hook-ups. Unfortunately, I am giving this as a Christmas gift, so I am only providing this answer from digging into the two boxes. Hope this helps. see less I have a partial answer.
