Answer:
No It's a complete board game that includes all you need to play right in the box. There is an additional expansion for the game that is available which adds more fun to the game but isn't needed to play. Lots of fun hope he enjoys it. If he does check out the expansion Scoundrels of Skullport.

Question:
Answer:
There is no solo rules built/included with the game, but there is a solo variant on boardgamegeek.com (boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/110327/lords-waterdeep/files). This is a user-made variant. Not sure if Scoundrels of Skullport expansion is needed for it, however.

This game really isn't role playing. It's a worker placement game. While you do take on the "role" of a Lord, you aren't really adventuring/dungeon crawling like in normal DnD. I've played Stone Age on my iPad. It's a little more involved than LoW. I've never played Spyrium. LoW was the first worker placement that my group and I played, and it was a huge hit with us. it's pretty straightforward and simple. I would recommend it over most others if it's your first WPG. You can watch TableTop episodes on YouTube with Will Wheaton, where they play both LoW and Stone Age. you can also find iPad apps for both games. they cost a little money, but it will give you a feel for the games and make you feel a little better about whichever one you decide to buy for your group. see less
