Many of the reviews when I bought them had the same issue. I returned mine however apon delivery because I didn't realize how dangerous melamine is for you. It may be a blessing in disguise if they crack. I would Google the dangers of melamine.

Don't know where they were made but I had a set many years ago and loved them. Decided to buy a new set, pure disappointment, the new ones were smaller and flimsy, plus they cost more.

melamine is not bpa free - but the main issue in using it is when it cracks, the cracks can leach chemicals. If you choose to use these, watch out for a crack, and then its time to replace these.
