Good question. I just bought one unit to try first, even though I know that my luggage and backpack will use more locks. Sounds to me like someone in sales there is asleep at the switch.

I find the cables to be much easier than the rigid locks because you don't have to jiggle the whole lock around to find that magic angle that will allow it to pass through the things you are trying to lock. All in all the cable adds a few more degrees of usefulness to the traditional rigid lock style.

The lock cable fits easily through the zippers on my luggage. The zippers on most luggage seem to be large enough to accept a lock like this.

About 1 1/2 inches. I was able to use it on a suitcase with one broken zipper and locked it to the zipper or another compartment

keep in mind that these locks work great but can be a challenge to get open at times... so you may want to give more consideration if this is being used to lock a gun case that you might need immediate access too
