This remote is an infrared remote and requires line of sight between the receiver and the remote. I have been able to use it up to 30 feet, mainly limited by the fact that is the furthest distance I can go and still maintain line of sight.

UPDATE: I purchased this remote/receiver combo and can confirm that it does work to control the Amazon FireTV product.
According to the below link, yes, this is the correct 2nd gen MCE receiver that should work with AFTV. I am pondering purchasing myself as I want to control AFTV via IR and this is the only way I ha… see more
