The main stem is 5/8" with a 1/4" screw tip on top of that for adding size changing adapters. You can purchase adapters on Amazon and they are very inexpensive. If you don't need to change the size for any reason you can just slide your light or other fixture onto the 5/8" stem and tighten it down.

When I measured mine closed, it was 28.5". Also it came in a box that was 29". So 35 is definitely a typo.
