The Dyson DC33 would work great for you. I also have varying surfaces in my home and long hair. The vacuum sucks up all kinds of hair and debris on all kinds of surfaces. Had it for a couple of months and I love it

The only time a Dyson won't suck the bejebbers out of anything is if there is a leak in the connections somewhere. If the vacuum is not upright it will not suck. If it is upright check each and every connection to see if they are tight. Also check that the cannister is "clicked in" to the body of the machine. It is quiet, very quiet, the only time it makes a loud noise is when setting for floor is used on carpet, otherwise it is very quiet....Love my Dyson DC33!!!
